Joseph Malik It is based in a medieval fantasy world (mostly Vendel Age, with some social and political aspects pulled from Kamakura-period Japan). However, as fantasies go, I'm consistently told--and many reviews seem to bear out--that it's not quite like anything else out there. I concentrate on the technical details in the manner of a historical fiction or historical fantasy novel, but the plots hinge on those details, which makes it a lot closer to The Hunt for Red October than it is to LOTR or ASOIAF. I also write using a style and voice common to modern-day thrillers.

If you like LitRPG and you like epic fantasy, you'll probably like these books. I will tell you that they're fantasy written for adults; there's graphic violence, profanity, and sex.

Dragon's Trail is more sword and sorcery; The New Magic, the sequel coming out next month, is bigger in scope and is the start of the true epic fantasy part of the series.

Joseph Malik Hey, no worries. I would imagine that you don't necesssarily have to like LitRPG to like my books, but a lot of LitRPG readers do. I think one reason for this is that LitRPG is at its heart portal fantasy. My books are portal fantasy.

I have far many more epic fantasy and sword and sorcery readers than LitRPG readers. Dragon's Trail has been a bestseller in four countries, so it seems to have a pretty wide appeal.

What other questions do you have? Thanks again.

Joseph Malik Portal fantasy is exactly that. However, most portal fantasy is written for young adult readers, or even younger readers. I write my series for adults. So it's different from a lot of portal fantasy.
