Raff Kingsbury Thank you. I was understressing those other relationships in my head, I think. The ones I was thinking of were Des and Pen, Bosha and Tanar, Iselle and Cazaril, Iselle and Betriz, Cordelia and Bothari, Miles and Bothari. It had seemed to me that apart from the Vorkosigan-Vorpatril parings the others were less in focus -- I think I was guilty of confirmation bias there after the question occurred to me. I do think there's something to inspire the question; perhaps that the books are written largely about parts of societies which do contain a lot of formalised power dynamics. (Oh: by power dynamics I mean situations where one person has influence over the other's life in ways other than through their personal relationship, I think. Or where the influences run both ways.)

David Samuels Yeah there are quite a few relationships that differ from those archetypes. One of my favorites is Penric and Oswyl. Reminds me of Brother Cadfael/Sheriff Whatshisface from Ellis Peters

Margaret Hugh Beringar. I've been (re)reading a few Brother Cadfael mysteries lately. I hadn't thought of that similarity, but there's something in it.

David Samuels @Margaret Yup, that's him!

Bob Irwin Yes, you do talk a lot about government and family structure in Mile's world, but you do so much more.
