I agree, Ben. I will confess I read a lot of advice and even was posting on blogs. And reading more about El Salvador (where my novel takes place) & the poet Roque Dalton (who I added later as my protagonist might be related to him). But I have to say that going back to that story every day is what kept those ideas coming. As long as I was reading, revising, editing or writing something totally new, the ideas kept coming.
