Alas, not 'that' observant. As a transplanted Dub (in Boston), I'd have enjoyed McGahern (William Trevor, too) along the road. Keep up the great work and thanks again!
“John McGahern is one of my favourite Irish writers, The Barracks being the book that got inside of me the most.” I also love McGahern. I most liked The Pornographer.
Your debut book is amazing, Anne. The part with the pamphlet on grief and Maurice thinking she says nothing about coping with culpability really affected me. The bit about fathers not being able to acknowledge their sons’ success was also beautifully done. I could almost visualise Maurice staring down at the table in that NY restaurant, paralysed with embarrassment and inarticulacy, as Kevin’s boss lauded Kevin and his accomplishments.
I eagerly look forward to reading your next book.
