Thanks for that Dane. Btw on your Amazon profile page your book Defenders of Dusk isn't shown just the other two.
Yeah the listing for that one has been problematic due to the format I choose for it. I should have just stuck with 6x9 inches and saved myself the trouble! :)
Is there somewhere we can report broken hyperlinks for ebook versions of your books? Children of the Painted Apple; para 160 turn to 3 doesn't jump anywhere Also the same 3 at 318 para. Obviously you cant just correct one or two and update on Amazon each time. But perhaps if there is half a dozen found by others choosing different paths could amount to an update. So thats why i wondered if there is an email address we can send these to? or just comment on here instead?
Its fine to report stuff like this either here, or even on my Facebook. There's quite a bit gamebook community on Facebook if you haven't already investigated it. Unfortunately when it comes to the link issues with my ebooks, this stems from "poor author" syndrome. Because I'm self publishing on an almost non-existent budget, my tools are limited to open source software. So I write my books in Open Office which, while allowing for smooth transitions to PDF format for paperback publishing, doesn't work the same way for ebook. Instead I'm forced to convert my documents to an older Microsoft Word format so that KDP/Amazon will accept it, which immediately sheds the hyperlink for any single-digit section numbers of any usefulness. Sadly for now, the best I can suggest is that because this only happens with single digit links (2, 3, 4 etc) that if you want to follow one of those links then head back to the beginning of the book and turn to the section manually. Its a pain, I know, but until I can find a way to get around this issue it seems to be out of my control (short of never using single digit reference numbers in my gamebooks of course). Thanks for taking the time to read my book enough to discover this, though! :)
Ah that makes sense. At least if it only happens with single digits it can only happen 10 times, hopefully is all. As a side note i have been interested in creating a small gamebook as i like to make text adventures. And came across this software for creating gamebooks https://www.crumblyheadgames.co.uk/ it lacks features and although it cannot export to pdf or docs, i can export it to pdf via Calibre ebook library software and the links still work. Whether you still would have trouble converting it to the required format is another matter.
Actually that's the tool I use to chart my gamebooks (I prefer the way it readjusts everything without me having to move bits of flowcharts around manually). I don't use it for the actual writing though. If you're look at writing one or more yourself, and you haven't already done so, check out the Gamebook Author's Guild on Facebook (there's actually two with that name; you'd be wanting to one with more members). There's quite a few good people on their willing to lend advice and a helping hand, plus quite a few recently debuted gamebook authors.
Okay thanks for the info. Btw i was thinking with the single digit hyperlink issue perhaps you could use 01.. 02 as a work around the issue in future ebook versions.
I think changing the numbers may have done the trick. It certainly worked when converting it over. I've submitted updated manuscripts to KDP which will hopefully be live for download from sometime tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thats great! Your welcome. Have/will you do the same for the Dusk book too? i haven't played that yet but i have it and presume that might have the same issue?
Ok thats good to know. I just tried syncing my kindle app on ipad but do not see the change as yet. I went into settings and selected sync and i have whispersync for books on. Or should i try deleting the ebook and downloading it again?
I don't know how Amazon do it, but I'd half expect it to be a new download as the update is only placed on their server. I doubt its pushed to devices.
Ok that did the trick, it updated and can confirm the new new addition double digits for the lower numbers work.
