[close] As a writer of historical fiction - in fact, historical mysteries - I'm curious about how far readers feel one can push the facts. Kate Mosse, an old friend and author of Labrynth and Sepulchre, both set in SW France, is quite scrupulous in only using real-life characters in verifiable contexts. I am scrupulous in avoiding anachronisms, creating the correct atmosphere, and trying to reflect the general current of historical events - but I don't mind putting words into a sultan's mouth, for example. Having come to fiction from a history-writing background, perhaps I am more relaxed about specifics, and only try to get the feel right?
