[close] Purpose: People who read for pleasure, or just read more in volume, are more successful in school and in life. Google it. Almost every Fortune 500 CEO or impactful politician makes reading a habit in their lives. As your English teacher, I’d like to encourage you to make reading a habit. This will be accomplished through the time I explicitly give you in class to read independently a book of your choosing. Process: Starting the first full week of school, we will begin our weekly pattern of reading for 50 minutes in class. Once you have read your first book, you are welcome to ask for recommendations for other texts from your teacher or the librarian, or you may peruse reviews and ratings here or in other reputable online sources. Your book must be finished by the end of the quarter. If that means you must read outside of our class ISR time, so be it. Ideally, your time spent reading at home will (at the minimum) mirror the time spent reading at school: 50 minutes each week. Students are free to choose fiction and nonfiction books that they want to read as long as the books are appropriate to the student’s ability. Books may be hard copy, audio, or electronic. I will, however, highly encourage you to choose a hard copy. Your eyes are looking at screens a lot; be kind to yourself and pick up an actual book. Additionally, should you choose to listen to an audio edition of your ISR book, you will need to be able to reference specific pages and provide textual evidence with your ISR assignments, so be prepared for that.
