During much of the nineteenth century, many American women did not have the right to own property. Our women always did. The tipi belonged to the wife, just as in the southwestern pueblos the house belonged to the woman. Among whites, even the upper-class lady could take no part in politics. American women did not get the right to vote until 1920. Compare this with the women of the Iroquois Longhouse, who elected the tribe’s chiefs.
