[close] Welcome to The Socially Aware Womxn Book Club. We are all here to learn about the world around us in a socially conscious way. If you would like to join us for meetings you can find us here: https://www.meetup.com/g/thesociallyawarewomxnbookclub/settings/basic/ This group is here to bring together women and LGBTQ individuals who are concerned with topics of social injustice or would like to learn more about these topics through literature. The group title may sound a bit pretentious but the group is not. Please feel free to read the books and not come to the meeting or to come to the meetings when you have not read the book. The goal of this community is to include not exclude. Most meetings explore what we want to do with the knowledge we gained, an exploration of the social system, or a discussion on how the book has changed our understanding things. This is an exploration. Together we will read, meet, and discuss books regarding social issues that our world faces. Through engaging with this content the vision for this group is to connect with each other and seek ways to connect with the issues at hand in our world. My hope is this group provides an opportunity to connect like-minded people over real world challenges. Click here for a link to our book list. Group meetings work to center BIPOC and other under-privileged voices during the discussion.

[close] A place to discuss all the unique aspects of Deaf culture as highlighted in the thriller Silent Fear (A novel inspired by true crimes) by Lance & James Morcan. This group can also be an intersection of sorts where Deaf and hearing people can engage and learn from each other.

[close] "In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist" - Angela Davis. It feels like the world is changing, we know that being actively anti-racist will help accelerate the BLM movement and bring us close to a world without racism. Learning, listening and challenging our own implicit bias are all great ways to start this journey so this book group is here to build a community that can come together to have meaningful discussion driven by reading and digesting content relating to racism, colonialism, the history we never taught at school, bias and how we can drive change.

[close] This group is open to anyone who wants to join and agrees to our Ground Rules. This group is specifically aimed at providing continual accountability and opportunity to learn and unlearn what we know about systems of oppression. Topics are largely non-fiction but can include various topics, such as, race, activism, intersectional feminism, nationality, immigration, ability, policy change, socialized values, law, privilege, allyship, etc. This group is a BRAVE space, as safety cannot be guaranteed. Participation is "challenge by choice". However, there will be gentle encouragement and accountability provided by this community, particularly for embracing uncomfortable conversations in the spirit of learning and growth. Acknowledging a brave space is critical when learning about identity and discussing privilege and oppression. A brave space is inclusive to all races, sexes, genders, abilities, immigration status, and lived experiences. A brave space allows individuals to express themselves, challenge one another in a positive way (call-in vs. call-out), and learn from one another. Priority for reading / discussion material is placed with authors of minoritized identities.
