Transmississippi

The Transmississippi Theater of the American Civil War covered the area of the United States between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean. Most major battles in this theater were fought in Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Louisiana, while smaller battles and skirmishes were fought in Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.

The graybacks would open on the boats as they approached the upriver side of a promontory creating a bend, then rush across it to give them another shot from the downriver side. The Osage, Black Hawk, and Benefit in particular were recipients of this treatment. The navy responded by shelling the woodlands with their elven-inch cannons, an act analogous to swatting a fly with a sledgehammer - and about as effective. (chapter 13)
