Amanda, I totally agree about Beautiful Boy...I couldn't put it down. It was heartbreaking that the father was so powerless as his son continued to steal, lie, run away, etc., but amazing to see how he coped through it all.

Though this novella is set in Europe, it is really about America. Set against the European values of the time, the protagonist seems a little immoral. James was perhaps mocking her. What do you think? Is she immoral? Or is she just ahead of her time?

Some have said this is their favorite book. Do you agree? Why or why not?

People have read this book for over one hundred years. Is it still relevant today? Why or why not?

One student said that they thought the protagonist was immoral for not wanting to stay with her kids. What do you think?

Many call this book the first "Great American Novel," and praise it for its use of 'local color.' It also has been famously banned for a number of reasons. Why do you think people call it the Great American Novel? Do you agree? Is this book worth reading, or should we reconsider due to the language?
