103026 Thanks for stopping by Feliks. As the group moderator I just wanted to clarify that I posted those guidelines to give myself the option to regulate trolling, spam, and more extreme expression. I am very far from being PC and in fact a vigorous advocate of old-fashioned manliness. I welcome free-wheeling, un-PC discussion of un-PC men's adventure.

I'll check out your group and maybe drop a few comments.

Cheers

103026 Hey, I forgot to plug my own latest: Black Rum and Dynamite.

Black Rum and Dynamite by Patrick Baird

Havana, 1956 Gunner Quinn is back on the CIA payroll, hunting down a gang of deadly run runners. Along the way he tangles with gangsters, rebels, mysterious voodoo forces, and the beautiful temptress China Tampico. Blazing action, steamy sex, and lost history, all in one terrific read.

103026 Flight of the Phoenix by Elleston Trevor is a terrific, taut read. The lean prose is a perfect match for the story: a cargo plane crashes into the Libyan desert, stranded hundreds of miles from civilization with no hope of rescue, the survivors rebuild the plane from the wreckage and fly out. It was made into a great movie in 1965 starring Jimmy Stewart (a personal favorite) and if you enjoyed that film, you'd enjoy the original as well.

One thing that sets the book apart from the film is the chilling portrayal of the character Stringer, the sociopathic aircraft engineer. Trevor brilliantly makes you hate him at the same time you realize, along with the other characters in the story, that he holds their lives in his cold, ruthless hands. Classic Men's Adventure.

103026 Lord Jim, by Joseph Conrad, is highly regarding by critics, due to its sophisticated storytelling. It's a deep and moving examination of the nature of moral character and courage, expressed through the story of an outcast and coward who tries to redeem his honor.

Jim’s tale unfolds primarily from the viewpoint of a sympathetic ship captain named Marlow, and the reader is left to piece together the central mystery of Jim’s soul through scattered anecdotes, conversations, and letters.

Conrad is regarded a master prose stylist; there are certainly moments of beauty and arresting description in Lord Jim, but I think he occasionally goes on a bit. There are passages where three pages of text could easily have been boiled down to one, which makes Lord Jim (and much of Conrad’s work) a challenge for modern readers.

However, I do think it is well worth the effort. Lord Jim is a superb study of the notions of honor and courage and how difficult it is to live up to the expectations of a hypocritical society.

103026 The Beatnik Spy series features the adventures of Gunner Quinn, a part-time jazz player and part-time smuggler, whose exploits span the wild 1950s.

The Red Jade Door starts the adventure in 1954, as Gunner is blackmailed by the CIA into retrieving a priceless artifact from the deadly jungles of Guatemala. He faces spies, corrupt cops, a mysterious woman, and dark forces that stir from a lost temple after a door is left open after the moon rises...

The Godhead Formula continues the adventure in South America in 1955, as Gunner joins a gang of bikers roaring down the highway, looking for kicks. The road is blocked by ex-Nazis, murderous thugs, and a woman who isn't what she seems. At the end, Gunner must survive the test of...The Godhead Formula.

Available on Kindle, Nook, and Smashwords.
