Both my sons love the music from the films and will 'sing' it at appropriately dramatic moments in life. However, they both prefer the music from The Hobbit so far.
I think the Balrog is my son's 'favourite' creature from Tolkien and likes to draw/role play it. Not sure why - maybe a mixture of the power and fire, and the way it even scares all the orcs and trolls.
I was a little worried before I saw the film because of some of the negative comments made by reviewers (about the pace and the additions to turn it into 3 films). However, I loved it: I thought they got the tone right and I was happy about the additions coming from the appendix to The Lord of the Rings, the layering of what is happening elsewhere.
I too have always loved Tolkien, and now the films (and annoy everyone with interjections about what's missing or background history!) but I also cannot speak Elvish. I do love a good Middle Earth map though, official or fan-inspired.
I know it's a bit sad but, when I was studying Medieval English Literature at Uni, I always got a buzz when finding papers written by Tolkien or Lewis on the texts I was working on.
I love seeing different artists' interpretations of Tolkiens stories and characters. This year I finally treated myself to a calendar: it's John Howe and Alan Lee's The Hobbit Calendar. everyone comments on the artwork!
