Regarding question 3 and mothers transmitting culture, I have found this to be true in my own family. My father is from Germany and speaks German fluently, but my sisters and I have always had more of a connection to my mother's Italian heritage, even though the ties to Italy are much further back in my ancestry. I think daughters are socialized to feel closer to their families than sons are, and in turn pass that on to their own children.
9/11 is the experience that comes to mind first for me. I think it's similar to Bassey's experience with the Challenger explosion, since I was also in school and watched it on TV when it happened.
