I liked how the tar baby could be so many things. Consumerism and riches for the Streets. Valerian was "stuck" on the island because he had all he wanted. Also, they use various tar babies to keep Jade there. Her relationship with the "thief" had various aspects of the tar baby. The various servants were also "stuck". And of course the poor son of Valerian and Margaret. His past holds him down, but he's also found ways to move on from the abuse. And the ending!! Is he getting away? Leaving the tar? Or just returning to it in another way?Its been a month or two since I finished this and my TBI means I forget details quickly, so sorry if this is too vague. I really enjoyed this one, though.
I'm reading all Morrisons books this year with a group on FB. This is Morrisons first book with white characters as the main characters. She had some with women in the spotlight, then one with a man/boy (Song of Solomon), now this one, with a white family at the center. It gives a different message and POV from her other books. So fascinating!
Michael. You will be sorely disappointed. All her novels are this depressing. That’s how she writes. It’s brilliant and moving, but yes, depressing.
They are both fabulous! I think I enjoyed the first one more, but loved both. I am so excited about the third one coming out soon!
