He's not a detective lead, but after someone intro'd me to him a few years back, I enjoyed all of Westlakes Parker novels.

He plays it pretty straight, but I've always liked Captain Bellotti in Leonardo Sciascia's Day of the Owl. My favourite Australian crime character - Frank Calder, from Peter Temple's novel Shooting Star (although neither are series characters.) I suppose I haven't read a lot of series, for whatever reason. I haven't enjoyed the last couple so much, but I still go back to Dave Robicheaux for a look, and have done for a couple of decades...
