In my current WIP I've used dreams to show flashbacks. For the story I think it works well because the dream element allows for a certain amount of doubt as to how accurate the details are. In other works I have used entire chapters, alternating between the present and the past. I think, like G.G. said, as long as the reader understands what is going on (i.e. they know it is a flashback) then it works. Kamil, I agree completely! I love knowing how a character became who they currently are. And, Bisky, you are so right. I really liked Snape before but those flashbacks made me love him.
My character believes he has no control over his life, that he's just a pawn being moved by some cruel, unseen force. BTW, I love this article!
Claire wrote: "@Lilly crying makes you angry? LOL!"You know those people who have terrible cry faces? People whose face twists like they just tasted a sour lemon because they're fighting the tears instead of just letting them fall? That's me. Not a pretty picture, better just to avoid it. ;-)
When I get stuck I typically skip ahead to the next scene I've figured out and continue writing. Later I'll come back and somehow know exactly what I should have written to connect the two scenes. I also keep whatever originally inspired me nearby (like Bisky said). Looking at it again usually triggers something that gets me writing again.
Hello everyone! I am a YA writer about to begin the long road to being published. I write mostly novels, but occasionally end up with a short story or two. Poetry intimidates me. I do NOT like romantic movies or books and crying makes me angry (yes, there is a small chunk of ice where my heart should be). My current WIP is a sci-fi/fantasy piece but I also enjoy writing horror. I look forward to meeting everyone and reading your work!
