Just finished as well! I really enjoyed Marathon Mum! It isn't the kind of book I'd normally be drawn to but I'm so glad to have read it. I appreciated how many of the earnest moments were offset by humour. Many of the stories in the book had me in tears (Lesley's was from laughter).
I love to see women succeeding, especially in the face of men who try and keep them down. This book was a beautiful celebration of women doing just that and it's incredible to see that the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other helped them do that.
Women supporting women is just the best.
Harry and Nigel - wow I thought not stretching was sacrilege! I'm keen to read about why you don't believe in it Nigel.I've just finished Running in the Midpack and quite enjoyed it. I was really drawn to the psychology chapter because I always find the mental aspects of athletic performance interesting. The race day chapter was useful for me too, as I haven't done many races before so it's good to know a bit more detail about them.
I usually read this before bed in the evenings and it made me really excited to run the next morning (by the time the morning rolled around and it was actually time to get up I was less excited). It also makes me really want to do a race!!!
I'll definitely dip back into this book when I'm looking for running inspiration or training advice.
Oh, also I take umbrage at him saying "There's barely an Australian alive who hasn't heard of the ultra-runner Cliff Young." I'm Australian and hadn't heard of him, haha!
Finished the book this morning! It was a heartwarming story but honestly I found Dion to be a bit obnoxious. The part where he talked about only entering the half marathon to beat his friend's time bugged me – because his friend was obviously working really hard and proud of his times, then Dion comes along and suddenly makes it a competition. To me it felt like he was invalidating his friend's efforts. Maybe I'm reading too much into it though! I'm glad he softened up throughout his journey and learned to appreciate other people.
Regardless, I enjoyed reading this book and hearing details of the mammoth ultras! I don't know that much about ultra races so it was eye opening to see what goes into them.
Thanks Bookhounds for a great first read! Already looking forward to next month :)
What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami! It combines three of my favourite things: running, reading, and writing.
