13. San Francisco, California
San Francisco’s mist-covered hills and centuries-old streets tell the stories of a spooky past. But perhaps one of the most famous haunted sites in the city is the former prison grounds of Alcatraz. It is long believed that a few ghosts are still roaming the hallways and abandoned jail cells of the island prison, Al Capone being the most famous.

Cahawba was originally founded to be the original capital of Alabama. The town was abandoned after the Civil War, but some residents have remained indefinitely. Colonel C.C. Pegues, a Civil War colonel who was mortally wounded, is said to still occupy the town. He takes the shape of a peculiar ball of white floating light that appears in the woods at his former home.

South Carolina has its fair share of ghostly haunts but Pawley’s Island off the coast of Myrtle Beach may be one of the most haunted of them all. The most famous ghost on the island is that of the Grey Man, who appears to warn people of impending hurricanes. 12. Bodie, California
A ‘ghost town’ refers to a town that has been abandoned and is frozen in time. But for some ghost towns, like Bodie, California, the term “ghost” is much more literal. The former mining town in the Sierra Nevada mountains is one of the most haunted in the country.
The J.S. Cain House is said to be haunted by the ghost of a maid, while the Mendocino House has several resident ghosts. In the cemetery, the ghost of a three-year-old child who met an untimely death is said to come out and play with living children who wander near the grave.

8. Shoshone Ice Caves, Idaho
Shoshone is a small mining town in Idaho, but it’s the ice caves of the area that are most known for their haunted happenings. The ice caves were built into the state’s longest lava tube and were used as a source of ice for the town of Shoshone in the 19th century.
Paranormal activity has long been reported in these caves, including ghostly footsteps and whispers in the dark.

And if you’re driving along Archer Avenue, keep a lookout for the “Vanishing hitchhiker” who has been hitching rides since the 1930s.

A tragic past of slavery, mysterious threads of voodoo and hundreds of years of history have brewed up quite the recipe for hauntings across New Orleans. Many spots across the city have reported spirit activity.
Antoine’s Restaurant, for one, is said to still be haunted by its original proprietor, Antoine Alciatore. But the most famous ghost in the Crescent City is Marie Laveau, “The Voodoo Queen.” Residents of New Orleans will visit her crypt at the St. Louis Cemetery and leave her offerings, hoping she’ll grant them favors.

Cherokee, North Carolina

11. Cherokee, North Carolina
Cherokee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Swain and Jackson counties in Western North Carolina, United States, within the Qualla Boundary land trust. It is located in the Oconaluftee River Valley, and it is the capital of the federally recognized Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, one of three recognized Cherokee tribes and the only one in North Carolina. The community also serves as a tourist destination, with numerous campgrounds, motels, and hotels serving visitors to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with a major entrance to the park lying within the community. The Cherokee Historical Association runs the Oconaluftee Indian Village, a living-history museum, as well as the popular outdoor drama Unto These Hills, and is associated with the Museum of the Cherokee People. The Oconaluftee River flows through the town and is popular for tubing. This charming town will take you straight into the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway, but make sure you spend ample time in the southern locale itself for its rich Native American culture.

Park City, Utah

Park City is a city in Utah, United States. Most of the city is within Summit County, with some portions extending into Wasatch County. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back. After a population decline following the shutdown of the area's mining industry, the city rebounded during the 1980s and 1990s through an expansion of its tourism business. According to 2021 data, the city brought in a yearly average of $529.8 million to the Utah economy as a tourist hot spot, $80 million of which was attributed to the Sundance Film Festival. The city has two major ski resorts: Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain Resort (combined with Canyons Village at Park City). Both Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resorts were the major locations for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics, and are expected to reprise these roles for the 2034 Winter Olympics. Although they receive less snow and have a shorter ski season than do their counterparts in Salt Lake County, they are much easier to access. Park City is perfectly placed near many beautiful hiking trails, and boasts stunning views of the Wasatch Mountains. Oakland is a town in Garrett County, Maryland, United States, and its county seat. The town is home to the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Oakland Station, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and restored in the 2000s. Today, the station is mainly used for special organizations or gatherings, although trains still run on tracks behind the station. A leaf-peeping trip to Maryland is not complete without a visit to Swallow Falls State Park, where bold yellows reflect off of the Youghiogheny River.

The city is named for the mineral galena, which was in the ore that formed the basis for the region's early lead mining economy. Galena developed as the largest steamboat hub on the Mississippi River north of St. Louis. Galena was the home of Ulysses S. Grant and eight other Civil War generals. Bull's Bridge is one of three remaining covered bridges in Connecticut dating from the 19th century. George Washington crossed the Housatonic River near the site of the present bridge in 1781. Built in 1842 by architect Ithiel Town, this single-lane covered bridge features a lattice truss design.
