So many questions! Charles kept all these Lazar items even after he fell out with his family, ran away and changed his name.. He was deeply hurt when his parents didn't accept the woman he fell in love with because she was not a vampire. But they were still his family, part of the reason it hurt so much was because he loved them. If he didn't care for them he would've ran away with Susannah without a care. Throwing away items of memorial value is hard, even if the memories they bring up hurt.Plus the rings especially would have been more connected to his wife than his parents - although that's not true for before they actually decided to use them as wedding rings. What was the order of events? Did he change his name before meeting Susannah, before telling his parents about her, before marrying her, or after she dies? I wonder when his parents explicitly made their opinion on the situation known. Maybe the rings entered the equation before the big falling out.
Also the symbol on the rings is tiny isn't it. Maybe Charles and Susannah just liked the rings and didn't attach all this weight to it like we are doing, lol.
The rings cannot have been the Count and Countess's before because that just doesn't make sense (ie. giving away your wedding rings while still married, in love and alive). Maybe it's a family tradition rather than heirloom, and the rings are made for every generation? Maybe he thought that respecting the family tradition (if it is one) would mean his parents were more likely to respect his decision to marry a human. Like I said, so many questions!
The more I think about this whole Jackson thing, the more it gives me the creeps. He should not be messing around anyone like that, especially not his long-distance girlfriend who already has to go through so much anguish from him being famous. Jerk move J. Wow haha, that does make it sound like he works 24/7. His work probably involves a lot of publicity, script memorising and travelling as well as the filming, writing and attending premieres. It all sounds exhausting. I hope his parents are looking out for him. Speaking of, are his parents ever mentioned in the books? I don't believe they are, that could be an interesting story line.
Maybe they can't use the script material if the writers have gone on strike because although it exists, it's their creative property. If they haven't agreed terms then they can't use it?
Horatio was bending over the coffin to wake Ivy up, maybe.
But it's Olivia!? Do they really think she'd freak out about that? It does make sense because they're so obsessed with tradition but that doesn't make it right. You think the whole Charles/Susannah situation would have opened their eyes. What was their plan anyway. If Ivy went away to boarding school, I'm pretty sure Olivia would have noticed her missing!
Love your last paragraph. I think I agree with all of that.
I think this is your favourite location in the MSTV series, Dais? I also love it. I think for me it's because it's so different to Franklin Grove, and what with the manor, palace and royalty etc. I would guess also what a lot of MSTV readers are used to in their real lives. It's great to be able to vicariously live through Ivy and Olivia as they explore these epic buildings and grounds. Sort of like what's so awesome about Hogwarts with all the history, secrets, grandeur and detail.
Here's a question for anyone... What is your favourite moment of the series that happens in Transylvania? (it doesn't have to have anything to do with the location, can just be a moment that happened while they were there) I'll have a think and get back to you with my answer.
Also in case you haven't seen it peeps, Daisy made an awesome poll about your favourite location from MSTV that you can vote on anytime here: https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
The last time I read this book the thing that stood out to me was how rude the Countess is to Ivy. 'Ivy Vega.' The Countess's voice was suddenly as cold as ice, her hard gaze focused on her vampire granddaughter. 'Don't you think helping the local community is the least you can do after...?'She is referring to Ivy abandoning her studies in Transylvania. In this book they've got to blend in with the (I nearly said muggles, haha) bunnies because of the mysterious blogger threatening to expose vampires.
She kept going on about this being Ivy's one chance to prove herself, to think about what's best for others and not just herself, how she was so disappointed in her and how Ivy kept letting them all down. I just wanted to shake the Countess!
At the same time I think we are all guilty of sometimes getting ahead of ourselves and expecting things of other people. The Countess wants the best for Ivy but she isn't thinking through her actions and in my eyes is in the wrong in this book. This did all lead up to Ivy's seriously cool comeback though so guess I can't complain ;)
'Grandma, I have never let you down before. [...] Never. You and Grandpa will always be important to me - but I've always made the choices that were true to myself. Isn't that what the best vampires do?'I love this so much.
For some reason I hadn't copied your timeline of Twin Spins (#9) to the top Daisy so I've just done that. I've made a start on the Date with Destiny (#10) and the Flying Solo (#11) timelines but I haven't finished either and both are very rough drafts at the moment.I'm definitely finding it harder to sort the timelines for the later books where I'm not as familiar with the story lines and the days aren't laid out as clearly but it's still lots of fun when I find the time to sit down and think about them!
That quote with her and Bethany is super cute! One of my favourite moments with Rebecca is when, in Lucky Break, Ivy and Olivia show her Susannah's journal
Rebecca's hands lingered over the cover but then pulled away. "I am so tempted to read it, but I never knew what she wrote in there- and no one wants their sister reading her journal."It's so thoughtful that she wants Olivia and Ivy to read it without her. And then at the end it's so sweet when her, Charles, Ivy and Olivia all read it together and share memories of Susannah.
Ok. I've changed it to: Wednesday: Toby releases article in school newspaper about Ivy & Olivia being long-lost twins. Ivy & Olivia find matching mark of an eye with a V on it on their rings. They research this and their biological parents on the Vorld Vide Veb. (It later transpires that it's the Lazar family insignia).
For reference, it was: [Wednesday: Toby releases article in school newspaper about Ivy & Olivia being long-lost twins. Ivy & Olivia look for more information on their biological parents on the Vorld Vide Veb.]
I admire Ivy so much through this whole Wallachia situation. After thinking about how she hadn't wanted to leave Franklin Grove but had been persuaded she decides... "I'll make the most of this," she muttered to herself, gazing out over the lawns. "Whatever it takes."She gave it her best shot, she tried something she wasn't sure about, kept an open mind and in the end decided it wasn't for her. That is so cool. She said something (I can't find the exact quote) about realising that she couldn't change Wallachia and if she stayed Wallachia would change her in a way she didn't want.
She didn't just dismiss it without trying and she didn't go through with it just because it was what her grandparents wanted. Go Ivy! She believed in herself, enough both to give it a try and to trust herself in the end. I love that girl.
Mistake, I agree. I am quite proud of myself for spotting that. ;)I really should go get the books to check but did Ivy and Olivia's rings have a V on them? I always had it in my head that they were family heirlooms (for 'Vega') but Vega is just the name Charles took when ran away, his parents are Lazars. Maybe it stands for vampire? If they were family heirlooms, why would Charles use them as wedding rings when his parents didn't approve of Susannah? Or it's quite possible I just made this all up.
From Date with Destiny (MSTV #10) Charles says to Vincenzo, "I embarrassed you? I believe you embarrassed yourself by turning up looking like you were going to a fancy-dress party as Peter Cushing."Ivy and Olivia didn't know who that was, and neither did I until I looked it up. Peter Cushing is an english actor who lived from 1913 – 1994 and is probably best know for playing Grand Moff Tarkin in the first Star Wars film. His acting career included over 100 films though including many horror and vampire productions. He played vampire hunter Van Helsing in the 1958 adaptation of Dracula.
Ivy twisted in her seat. "You know, Dad, it was pretty cool what you did today."I laughed so much at this part in Date with Destiny (MSTV #10). Charles is pretty cool. I only vaguely remember his character progression in the next few books so I'm excited to re-read them and pay more attention.
"You act surprised." Charles frowned. "I'm cool. I'm hip." He turned on the spot, modelling his admittedly very suave-looking tuxedo.
On page 178 there is this quote I really want to discuss... "So you and Mom didn't get the wedding you wanted?" asked Olivia, after a quiet moment had passed. This is interesting because Ivy and Olivia wear rings from their parents which they were given when they turned 10. This is one of the reasons they realised they were twins when they met. My memory is that they were wedding rings, Olivia wore their mothers and Ivy had their dads which she wore on a necklace because of its larger size. Am I making this all up or do you guys recall this too?
"No." Charles rubbed the ring he still wore on his left hand. "But I did have a wonderful marriage which is the most important thing."
If I am right Charles wouldn't still wear his ring because Ivy would have it. So is this quote a mistake or do you think there is another explanation? Maybe it's an engagement ring (though men don't traditionally get them do they) or Ivy gave it back to him when they discovered he was their bio-dad. Thoughts?
This is so interesting because at first it just seems like a mistake but it brings up a cool discussion! I don't see any reason why you couldn't have a vamp with dark skin. All you need is a person with dark skin to have a baby with a vamp and if they survived, which we know isn't always the case they would be mixed race, possibly a vampire and possibly have dark skin right. So yes, like you say if people are sticking to the Laws of the Night it's unlikely where the communities are already heavily white, but laws can change. And who is to say that un-pale vamps don't already exist in other communities around the world. All we have seen is Transylvanian and American vamps (and Reiko) in the series so far I believe, correct me if I'm wrong. When Ivy is in Transylvania she remarks on how backwards vamp culture is. In terms of how strict and judgmental the vampires are. I guess it's probable that racism is mixed in with that seeing as slavery was abolished in the 1800s and for vampires that's only one or two generations ago right? Or maybe there are even vampires still alive that can remember those days, I don't remember how old Charles, and Ivy and Olivia's grandparents are. So I guess vampires with dark skin might have chosen to live outside of vampire communities or in their own vamp communities to get away from the prejudice and hate.
My Sister the Vampire is not the most diverse series by any means. You mentioned in our What's next for MSTV discussion about Camilla possibly being LGBT+. There are many dimensions of this series that could be expanded upon.
Woah that's so much stuff, I love it! Yep I was thinking about generalising it to nerdy slogans too. Sure Steven Spielberg sounds great. And I'm not sure about her favourite subject. I'm leaning towards drama or english. Probably drama because I don't remember there being anything in the books about her particularly loving English class and that play in #7 was epic.
How could I forget reading as one of her hobbies?! And that forums one is awesome! Haha, yaaaaas I love obsessing over my fav books. <3 The rest of your ideas are great too.
I found more about Olivia's cheerleading escapades in Date with Destiny and commented it on our Olivia Abbott thread (message 20). :)
In the Switched thread (message 35) we have been discussing what cheerleading competitions Olivia has participated in. I found this quote in Date with Destiny (MSTV #10). On page 125... Olivia may not have had any vamp powers, but she had competed in the state cheer-leading competition three times, and that meant she had a few special skills of her own. This is so awesome! I wonder how old she was and how she did. I'm not sure if state is the same level as national or not? I'm guessing not so this quote doesn't really answer our discussion of whether Olivia has performed in the cheerleading nationals or not. It's still awesome either way.
Oh man I noticed that line about Sophia working in the Meat and Greet and was so excited to discuss but I see we already noticed it. This is the book where I lose a lot of my respect for Jackson. In the previous books he's rushed off his feet with work so he ends up surprising Olivia. In this book he's literally lying to her and causing her pain...
"I'm so sorry, but I've been invited to a live TV interview in Boston and I couldn't turn it down. I don't know what to say. You understand right? That's why I bought the boots, to make it up to you."... so he can surprise her and seem like the good guy later on. Not cool. I do think Jackson is a good guy, he's super nice, I just find his habit of ignoring Olivia until he is ready to surprise her super disrespectful and annoying. At one point he was like "It was tough to keep this all from you" and I was screaming at the book WHHHHHY do you even need to keep the fact you're coming to see her from her??!??! Haha.
The boots were beautiful, but they didn't stop Olivia's heart from dropping down into her slippers.
