I think I hit a wormhole mid-January and ended up in June. Where has the year gone!

Thank you and hello! Very excited to have found this group. I'm new to Goodreads so not sure how everything works but really looking forward to hearing people's recommendations for new books to try.

Fantasy thrillers are the best - and if they have a gothic setting then it's even better!

1240896 Hello everyone, thank you for letting me join. I can't wait to read people's recommendations and find new titles I might otherwise have missed. I wanted to share with you my latest obsession (I'm now beginning my third read) because I'd love to have more people to talk about it with! It's a new book called King Street Run by VR Ling. I bought it as an ebook initially but liked it so much that I got the paperback last month. It's a fantasy thriller and revolves around a student at Cambridge who meets some unusual people who turn out to be personifications of the colleges. I can't big this book up enough. I don't want to give too much away but it's FULL of easter eggs and that's something I absolutely love. Some are connected to character names, no character is what they seem, there are little things like the book titles of m.R James hidden in the text (I've found five but a friend tells me he's found seven) and that's because the main character loves m.r James, the use of latin in certain places is really clever because when you google it you find out it means something else and it gives another layer to the story, there's loads of double meaning. The more I dig, the more I'm finding little things. On top of that and perhaps most importantly though it's a great story and really well written. The colleges are the kind of characters that you desperately want to be real people and some of their conversations (especially between John and Trinity) you can imagine really taking place. There's funny bits, but it's not laugh out loud funny, it's more a dry type of humour, socially observant with some brilliant turns of phrase. I really associated with the main character who is called Thomas and is forever saying "thank you". I think I'm becoming obsessed :-D I'm trying to convince my friend to go to Cambridge with me so that we can find all the portals and places in the story!
