Awesome book! Here's how it fits in:

Plot -- The book is basically a "puzzlebox" mystery in space, kinda like if you put Agatha Christie and Scooby-Doo on a spaceship, with a powerful alien government tightening the snare. The mystery is gripping and the pacing is tight. Something's always happening, and none of it is filler.

World-building -- The story takes the characters to several planets in the galaxy with unique aliens and governments everywhere. While the focus is on the mystery, you get just enough details to get a sense of how vast this setting really is.

The book was originally published in 2000 or so, and recently the author has been publishing a series closely related to it. The series is next on my list!

Sounds like a great series! The first book is on my to-read shelf, and I'm looking forward to giving it a go.
