At the beginning of the book Amy was just a friend and acted that way towards Kevin. She had a boyfriend and was focused on her boyfriend and her writing. Then as the book goes on she begins to reveal more and more information to Kevin about her boyfriend and how their relationship is going. As they go back and forth writing e-mails to each other she starts to open up to Kevin and ask questions about his relationship and other events going on in his life. Then her boyfriend breaks up with her. She is devastated. So, she turns to Kevin for help. She asks to go to the movies, she wants to see a movie about a subject that she is writing about. She says it is "strictly for research". But, Kevin thinks otherwise.
In the book, "Shakespeare Makes the Playoffs" by Ron Koertge, a main theme is women coming in and out of Kevin's life. His mother passed away and he is devastated. He has a girlfriend names Mira and they are very close, but, she does not like the same things that he does. His father has started dating again, and Kevin does not know how to deal with it. He wants to be mad but he wants his Dad to be happy. The girls name is Anna and according to Kevin she is cool. Also, when he is at a poetry reading he meets a girl name Amy, who "is not a beautiful as Mira but, she is more fun." Kevin has some control over what girls come into his life but he does not know what to do with Mira and Amy.
