Werner, I liked this movie so much that I now have a copy in my DVD collection to watch when I want to do so. Like Paula, I have not read the books, but the movie stands alone for me as well. Thanks for bringing the two together. Science fiction and action movie watchers would both enjoy this.
One of my all time favorite series (and there are lots of them) is The Dark is Rising books by Susan Cooper. We have an omnibus version here in the library. I own these myself and admit to reading them several times. They are in the Juvenile section of the library, but for adults who enjoy fantasy and the battle of good vs evil, I would recommend giving them a try.
Like you and Barb,. I love these first Dragon books! And like Barb, I have read both the juvenile and adults trilogies several times. I have not read many of the later ones, just sort of lost touch with her writing. But I am definitely a fan of McCaffery!
Troublesome Young Men: The Rebels Who Brought Churchill to Power and Helped Save EnglandJust finished reading this book and would like to recommend it to those of you who enjoy reading about history. I have not read many books about Great Britain's history, but this one was quite good. The author, Lynne Olsen, has done a very interesting job of describing the period in time before England entered into World War II and beyond. The months between September 1939 and May 1940 are often referred to as the "phony war" in England. Olsen describes the political intrigue that took place as about 30 young men defied their party and pushed for the end of the Chamberlain era and to establish Winston Churchill as prime minister. The book does not read as dry non-fiction, but as a lively look at the lives of these young men (and a few women) who brought together a coalition of political members of Parliament, establishing Churchill as the PM and turning the "phony war" into a real war. This change revitalized Great Britain and its resolve to mobilize to defeat Hitler and Germany. Olsen writes about the lives of these men and their careers after WW II as well. The book was engaging and, while not a quick read, one that I wanted to read to the end.
I have just started the Troublesome Young Men by Lynn Olsen. A story about Winston Churchill and the young men who helped bring him to power. Just beginning, so I don't have an opinion. It is in the Easley Library collection.
I also will echo many of Paula's comments. I have been a reader since I was very small and have always enjoyed having a book in my hands. However, I do own a Kindle and now a Samsung tablet with the Kindle app on it and I do a lot of reading that way as well. I can't seem to stop myself from buying paperbacks that catch my attention when I am shopping in a store with a good collection of books for sale, but I also often buy books for my Kindle when I know a new one is out from an author I like.I need to follow Crystal's lead and begin to weed some of my print collection and donate those books somewhere (some will probably end up at Easley Library). I used to only keep one specific author and share the other things I bought, but now my print collection is really too big at home. We'll see. I'll add that to the other projects I want to do :-)
Hi! I am Barbara Gillespie and a little slow adding information about myself. I have been at Easley Library since September of 2013 and really like being a part of the library and the BC community. For many, many years before coming here, I worked in school libraries at all levels from kindergarten through high school. High school was my favorite because of helping with research and working with the high school students. I have been a reader all my life and have said that my love of reading came from my dad, who would read anything--ketchup bottles and cereal boxes :-) My mom is a reader as well, but growing up she was busy being a mom and didn't have much time to read--except to us. I do read a variety of things. I like biographies, fantasy, a little science fiction and period romances. Those are mostly fluff, but quick reads. I also like mystery as well and many of the classics.
Nora Roberts (also writing as J.D. Robb) and Fern Michaels are two of my most favorite contemporary authors. I enjoy having a book in my hands, but also have a Kindle and the kindle app on my tablet and phone. Easy to use when waiting for appointments, etc.
My husband and I enjoy fishing and boating and have a camper and boat on a lake in TN.
I grew up in northeast Ohio, but have been in Virginia for lots of years and this is home now.
Barbara
