I just finished Edith Wharton's Victorian "society" novel The Age of Innocence Newland Archer has a moral dilemma concerning who he marries, and who he wants to marry. He struggles with his conscious and loses when he doesn't follow his heart. This is internal conflict, since he doesn't want to be scandalous .. it just wouldn't be proper to expose true feelings. Even though many of his wife's family suspect something, they put on airs and act like nothing is abnormal .. they want to remain innocent of his indiscretions.
