Audio or print? Curious to know how this is!Linda wrote: "
Empire of Pain: The Secret History of the Sackler Dynasty"
I have been reading more about the Neopolitan novels than any other book in all of the many year end round-ups I've read and listened to. I'm happy to have all four books, signed by the translator who I met in Brooklyn this summer, waiting for me on my bookshelf. It's going to be the Winter of Ferrante for me. I've got a short trip to Fire Island and a longer trip to Cape Cod coming up this summer. Plus, a few kid-free weeks in between which means long, lazy evenings of undisturbed reading. I'll be listening to Saint Mazie, narrated by the fantastic Tavia Gilbert (a recent Oprah pick, I hear), and in print, on the beach (in hardcover, even!) - In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume.
The Lit Up Show is a fairly new podcast I've enjoyed so far. I've listened to fun conversations with Hanya Yanagihara and Heidi Julavits. I also checked out Uncovered for the episode where Ann Kingman was a guest and enjoyed it. I listen to The Readers and BOTNS regularly, but my all time favorite is the New Yorker Fiction Podcast, which I eagerly anticipate every month.
I enjoyed the first half, but was disappointed by the second. It felt rushed, and not at all believable based on the background presented in the first half. To me, Tom wasn't portrayed as someone who had that in him. It seemed to me like the author had her ending in mind, and then sort of jury rigged the plot to fit.
I started The Bees this morning on audio. I'm enjoying Orlagh Cassidy's narration and it seems like it will be a compelling, unique story.
I just finished The Girl on the Train on audio and was hugely disappointed by the second half and ending of this greatly hyped book. I also recently finished Rainey Royal, which I loved. Gorgeous, startling prose, complex characters and a lush and gritty setting - 1970's New York.
