135957 So, I'm really liking this book. The beginning was a huge info dump, but after I worked through I really started to like it. The satire is the best part. The author is pointing and laughing at his own society, I mean, Henry Ford is God now. That makes me laugh every time somebody says, "In Ford's name!" or something.

I feel sorry for the people in this society, though. When Lenina is with Bernard and he's trying to talk with her like she's an adult and she gets upset and starts crying. She's just so childish, but that's a celebrated personality. So Bernard, who wants to be an individual, is the black sheep of the society.

Also, it's clear there's a lot of sex going on in this society, but they kind of associate it with their religion of Henry Ford. When Bernard goes to that place with the eleven other people, it's a spiritual movement followed by a sex orgy. I think the point of society is just get what you want when you want it, and if you're not happy about it, just do some drugs...

The Director told Bernard about his own trip to the reservation, and then he was embarrassed. I thought it was just about not being a part of a society that revealed their feelings or memories very often. But I agree with J, I think she was left there because of the baby. It was a mark on them as well as society, that they slipped through the cracks and despite the conditioning, there's a baby.

I can't wait to read more about John! I'm glad Bernard is taking him back. This is going to confuse this little perfect society they have going, lol

I looked up some of Huxley's biography, and on his death bed he asked his wife to give him some LSD, and she did. I thought this was interesting because there are so many drugs in this book. Everyone is getting high to numb their emotions or stay happy.

135957 Hello, hello!

I’m really loving this book. It’s starting to pick up a lot now and I’m reading one chapter right after the other. Wohoo!

I’m glad we met Mr. Craven and he seems pretty cool. I was expecting him to be this old mean guy, but he wasn’t really. He was more depressed and moody, really, but I think he wants to do right by Mary. He doesn’t know how to be a parent, actually. I mean, he pushed Colin aside because he reminds him of his wife. I think he’s a good person, just really distant.

And then there’s Colin. Mary finally gets a taste of her own medicine! She was always a brat and now she’s met a fellow brat. At least she has changed a little, and is endeavoring to change Colin. I don’t think he’s sick, I think he’s kind of a hypochondriac. I think everyone around him planted the idea of being ill in his mind, and now he believes it, and now everyone feeds that idea and it’s a vicious circle. And H was right, I think; his uncle wants him to die. At first I don’t think Colin wanted to be friends with Mary. To him, she was just another servant he could order around. When he wanted to see her, he thought he could ring a bell and get her. Well, she put an end to that pretty soon!

I think Dickon is my favorite character. He’s the rock of the story. He’s not ridiculous, or bratty, and he tells it like it is. I hope we get to meet the rest of his family soon. They seem to be the only ones with any sense. Could you imagine if they got hold of Colin?

They’d get him back into shape pretty quick, lol
Colin will probably tell someone about the garden, and I wonder what will happen. Colin is used to getting his way, but I wonder if this is a line even he can’t cross. I just have a bad feeling that when an adult finds out about the garden there isn’t going to be a happy reaction. Most of the house sees to keep to themselves and leave Mary to wander on her own, probably because Mr. Craven isn’t around to really run his estate. But I still think someone is going to find out…

And Mary is trying to speak Yorkshire! NO! Her dialogue was the only one I didn’t have a problem reading, LOL

And one of my favorite scenes was Mary yelling at Colin that there was nothing wrong with his back. She was so feisty and the maids thought it was funny.

135957 I am so excited about this classic! I've said this a dozen times before, but I love classics, so I knew I was going to like this before I even started... When I was really little this used to be one of my mom's favorite movies, but the more I read the more I realize I remember nothing...

It reads really easy, too, except for that Yorkshire nonsense. I wonder if that was something young children in England could understand without any problem, and it's just us yankees who are confused, lol

So, Mary was kind of annoying for a while, but she's getting better. I think I just started feeling sorry for her. She has no social skills because she hasn't had the chance to be around people. Her parents shut her out, and even the servants kept her at arm's length. It was nice to see that when she came to the house that the Martha kind of put her in her place, and treated her like a human being. I think that really switched her around, and helped acclimate her to... well, people, lol

I wonder if we're going to see Mr. Craven interact more with Mary? He's a mysterious figure. He seems to care about Mary from a distance, but his grief has crippled him.

I think I know what the crying is! I won't say what because I don't want to drop a spoiler or be wrong...

I love Dickon, even before he showed up in the book. Like J said, she needs a friend her age. She's been living in a hole for most of her life, and right now the only people she's finally been talking to have been adults. And a bird... (But I agree with you, H, the bird is almost "magical" in a way.) I hope she gets to visit Martha's family. They sound like so much fun, even I want to visit them...

I can't wait to learn more about this house! And the people in it, it's more than just a secret garden, I think it's a full blown secret estate.

135957 Okay so I have some general notes and then chapters 20-29 are down in the spoilers...

I don't know why Wrath doesn't want to be with Beth. I can tell he really likes her company, cares about her, finds himself thinking about her, but then he plans to just abandon her after she changes. I don't know if he's just too proud to admit that he wants a life with her? I'm not sure, but it ticks me off...

The other brothers definitely have baggage. Rhage reveals some of his "baggage" in an upcoming chapter. It's really interesting.

(view spoiler)
Jan 27, 2015 12:08PM

135957 Your notes are so funny, lol "The angry seven dwarves." I have to admit the names still make me laugh, but I'm getting used to a couple of them. Although, if I was going to name someone "Rhage" I'd just give up trying to make it look special and name him Rage. I'm assuming their parents gave them their names? Or do you think they gave themselves these names? It's like a secret code for a fraternity.

When Wrath broke into her apartment... that was a little funny. I mean, I just imagined him breaking in, with a plan in mind. He obviously didn't think, "Hm, I'm a leather wearing giant, I'll just come in through the back door and- Oh crap, oh crap! She's freaking out, quick, wipe her memory... Ahem, take two..."

And yeah, then he comes back and she freaks out and Boo is like, "Oh, look, my lil friend is back. Hello, friend!" I'd be so pissed if my cat betrayed me.

I really like Wrath. He has flaws, like he's blind. A blind vampire is kind of crazy, but I find it really interesting. And he's socially awkward. He knows how to be a vampire, and a warrior, but otherwise I don't think compassion and general social situations are among his skills.

I wonder if their transition means they trade something for their new bodies? Like, Wrath is going to triple in size, but he loses his sight. It's like payment to karma. Or, maybe the transition is like a gamble. You're not guaranteed a perfect body whatsoever, and you could wind up with a major flaw like that.

Yeah, he was NOT planning for sex. Maybe her transition is doing that to her, or maybe because she's a half-breed she isn't attracted like that to men who aren't vampires?

Mild spoiler, but I thought (Won't ruin anything for you, but I want to be polite...) (view spoiler)

The mourning ritual was interesting, it was sort of a look into their traditions. I know there are a couple of times where they speak an old language. I'm really interested in their culture and traditions, since so far the diamond thing was pretty intense.

I feel TERRIBLE for Marissa! She really cares about him, and I think he cares about her a tiny bit, but it's more of a guilt thing. He knows he's the only one she'll feed from, so he goes to her out of guilt and obligation. Maybe he cares for her in a bit, but no he clearly doesn't love her. Havers seems to want to help her somehow, like get her out of the situation, but she's really stuck on Wrath. I wonder if they can just choose another mate? The glossary said the male vampires can have as many females as they want (although I haven't seen that so far), but I think it would be VERY awkward to have Marissa and Wrath AND Beth in the same house. I really hope Marissa will find someone else or at least be happy. Obviously Wrath and Beth are going to make a good couple, but Marissa deserves better.

Yeah, Mr. X? Not good with the names at all. Maybe he has a real name but we're not supposed to know it... (Maybe it's a character we already know, I don't know...) He's a little creepy. He's like scouting his students for possible lessers. And I can't wait for Wrath to get his hands on Billy Riddle. I hope there's a chapter on that, lol
Jan 26, 2015 03:19PM

135957 I think all of the kids gifts were a blessing to their people. William is the healer, and he does a lot for the country, obviously, when he jumped in to save everyone. Then Sion, of course, is the leader, and he's going to be king. Thomas is "charm" and I think he uses that one everyone, LOL

So if Quinn came from this world, does that mean she has a gift? Or is it just the royal family that has gifts...? Hm, I'll have to check again.

I can't wait to read the second on and see what happens. I have to wait a while, though, or I'll devour all of them in one sitting, lol But I'm glad, like you said, she didn't give away anything. (One of my favorite series still hasn't given away things and it's on book 14. So frustrating, but I'm glad they've held out!)

Also, I wonder if the royal family is done having kids yet, lol They have a lot, but they're so loving and I think they'll have more.
Jan 24, 2015 06:55PM

135957 Hey!

Yes, that ending was crazy. I thought there was going to be another chapter or something, but there wasn't. It was a huge cliffhanger! But in a good way. There was a lot left unanswered, so I can't wait to get to the other books.

I wonder why she just doesn't choose to go back the next day or something. I would call my mom and be like, "Hm... I have plans and my cell phone won't be on," packed a bag and gone back! I think that was the stretch of the book, all the time she spent in E. I could tell the author really wanted to write in her world. (She rushed through the first part and at the end.) I really love E, though. I can't spell it, glad we agreed to call it E, LOL

I loved the royal family! The little kids were so cute, and all the older kids were so caring. I hope that in the next books we see more of the older kids that weren't in this one. Simon and Max seem really interesting, and a little mysterious. I'd like to see how Simon takes all the pressure of being an heir.

I bet Tolliver has a lot more to do with what's going on than the first book let on! It seems like the poisoning of the books were deliberate, and I can't think of anyone else who was creepy and sketchy. Pretty much it was just him.

So Jennifer says the mystery of Quinn is solved later on? Awesome! I'm kind of glad the author didn't answer all the questions in the first book. She really held a lot back and keeps the intrigue going through the rest of the books. Sometimes authors answer everything and it's cool in one sense, but in another it's kind of disappointing. It's more fun to wait for the surprise than to get it sometimes, lol

I wonder what Hannah's gift was. I thought they'd say what it was in the Naming Ceremony, but no one did. Do you think that parents know? Or just Alvin? I assume that the symbol is on her necklace, so someone could just look, unless they can't figure out what that symbol means.

I wish there was more of Alvin. He seems like a really cool character to introduce and then he was gone. But I'm sure he'll be back.

I think my favorite character was Thomas. Second favorite was William. William was kind, but he also had a lot of responsibility, and it was interesting to see him develop. I like how I had no idea what he could possibly be up to in the beginning, but then to find out that he was a prince, and was a healer with a HUGE job to do, was a surprise. And Thomas was just the buffer between Quinn and that world. I know the rest of the family was so accepting and made her feel comfortable, but I think she would have had a tougher time if Thomas hadn't been there.

Anyway, thanks for reading this with me! I can't wait to read the second one. I have a feeling that world is a lot more complicated than one book could cover, :P
Jan 23, 2015 05:37PM

135957 Hey!

So here are my notes up to chapter 19, :D

(view spoiler)
Jan 21, 2015 02:40PM

135957 Hey hey!

So, yeah, I'm having a love hate relationship with this book. I've read the first two chapters, and I'm just going to get what aggravates me out of the way first.

So I don't understand why Quinn reacts to everything the way she does. It's kind of annoying. I know that the accident was terrible, but... she's acting like she had some one die in her arms. That's passed along to her mother, who at first Quinn wasn't planning on telling? You're on your way home, almost hit someone with your car, and drive up on an accident where you keep the man from bleeding to death, and you say nothing to your mother? It's just not how I imagined a normal teenager acting... at all...

Also, why doesn't she tell anyone that William was there? I see no point in hiding him at all. He was there, he helped, and I know he disappeared, but that's pretty important. She really gave no answer at all to justify her decision to hide the fact he was there. (And then people call her brave for helping the guy but... William kind of did most of the helping. Makes her sound kind of rude, like she won't give him any credit.)

Onto William... He seems really quiet and keeps to himself. I don't know much about him (aside from the info dump when Quinn went on about him moving there and how he didn't talk to too many other kids.) In the hallway, when Quinn sees him, and he goes into a classroom, AGAIN she makes a huge deal of it. Like he turned purple and flipped backwards into the room, chanting in Latin... He's not allowed to look away from her and go into a classroom?

I just feel like all of the mystery and tension is riding solely on the weird, overreactions of a teenage girl.

Then there's Zander... hm... again, my take on him relies on Quinn overreacting. He came over to see if she was okay during lunch, and she panics. She makes it sound like it's a "situation she needs to deal with." He asks her out, and again, she's pretty much panic stricken.

I don't understand the characterization. These characters have just been introduced. I only hear of them and see them through Quinn, and she just flips out about everything.

I did read the blurb, and I'm really excited to get to that point. So far, things just seem to be going slow for me. I guess the author just didn't know how to introduce the characters well? At least for me, it's started off a little shakey. It's like, "Zander talked to me, oh my goodness! Oh, wait, I see you're not flipping out, well let me load you with a bunch of information about him..."

I definitely love some of the characters though. The book, so far, isn't really mysterious, but the synopsis makes it feel mysterious, so that's why I'm still going.

Anyway! I've always told you I feel this way, but it's still a good book.

So, Quinn sees William again. Her reaction is still a little strange, but I guess he is going to the riverbank which would be odd. (I mean, in her defense, at least she's getting all weirded out by something that's finally a little peculiar.) And she decides to follow him. He's gone, and she can't find him.

I know you read the blurb, so I feel safe saying that... maybe he went back to his world? If that's the gate that goes back and forth. Do you think that's where he's always going?
Jan 17, 2015 10:50AM

135957 Just popping in to say I read your notes, :D I love how we all gravitate towards the funny parts. Well, most of the books is funny. Sometimes, though, it's just hilarious.

I think Lyall is the most level-headed character in this book. He's the calm and collected one who just walks behind Conall cleaning up after him. He's like everyone's parents, lol Poor thing, always ruining his outfit too. (And trying to dress Conall...)
Jan 14, 2015 10:59AM

135957 And here are my comments for seven and eight...

Jan 14, 2015 10:01AM

135957 Hello, everyone! So I read up to chapter nine, and knew if I didn't make notes now I wasn't going to remember what I wanted to say...

Chapters 4, 5, and 6...

(view spoiler)
Jan 12, 2015 05:24PM

135957 So I started this, wohoo! I haven't gotten too far, but I didn't want to read so much that I forgot all I wanted to say.

Chapter one thoughts...

I thought this was going to take place longer after the last book than it did. I couldn't imagine why her family would let her back into their house, but it turns out they didn't know the whole story. I should have known better than to think they'd be nice to her! I should feel bad that she got kicked out, but I'm glad she's out of there.

She also lost her job, but I have a feeling that was on the rocks for a while. Like they were looking for an excuse to sack her, and now they finally had one. So I'm not really surprised about that one. It was obvious they didn't care for her!

And chapter two...

Lord Akeldama is gone, which was a huge disappointment because I love him and Biffy. I was looking forward to erm... "seeing" them again, but now I can't, so boo... I wonder if it has to do with Alexia or something else. Boots was a little weird. They all are, actually, but he was extra sketchy. Maybe I'm going to assume the worst in this book.

Drunken Conall is hilarious. It's good to see that Lyall believes Alexia, yay! If only he could explain this to Maccon... But at least the earl can foresee that he'll need to grovel again. I thought he'd be out of control angry, actually, and he's really not, even though he's super drunk, lol But hopefully he'll come round and try and fix things...
