137842 Sonia, stop whatever you are doing and go find this book, which I just read about in the NYT Book review...

137842 I hope you like some or all of these! Sorry they all fell on you at once. Ouch.

137842 OK. Recommendations.
Brilliant, but gory (if you are a Criminal Minds fan, you should be fine with these)
The Mermaids Singing (Tony Hill & Carol Jordan, #1) by Val McDermid Blindsighted (Grant County, #1) by Karin Slaughter
Less gory (generally)
A Perfect Evil (Maggie O'Dell, #1) by Alex Kava Dead Wrong (Dead, #1; John Mancini, #4) by Mariah Stewart Rage Against the Dying (Brigid Quinn, #1) by Becky Masterman
Non-profiler, but still compelling mysteries
Raven Black (Shetland Island, #1) by Ann Cleeves
And my all-time favorite mystery series
One Grave Too Many (Diane Fallon, #1) by Beverly Connor

I just listed the first book of the series. I have read all of the books in all of these series. Love them.

137842 Sonia, I just took a moment's break from work and saw the Jack Reacher full size quote and almost shot an onion ring out of my nose. That would've hurt. I have seen the trailer for the new Reachre thingy, and I might give it a try. It won't be as good as the books though. I am predicting the obvious.

I put one of the Peter Ash books on my TBR, but I haven't tried it yet. I never have great luck with the " if you like x, you will like y" thing. I don't generally like to read the same book by a different author, but the series has gotten some good reviews.

When I get home I will send some recommendations your way on profiler books. Now I have to finish chewing and get back to putting frames together.

137842 The First Auster book I ever read was Travels in the Scriptorium, which I loved, and it turned me on to his writing. He does not tend to pick the easiest subject matter for his stories.

137842 Wow. Thank you. I will add several of these to my list.

Have you gotten to Thomas Pynchon yet? I know you can relish the weird, and he is really good at that.

137842 So are there any authors from that list that are absolutely worth adding to my TBR? There are quite a few from the list that I have tried and had various shades of meh, like John Updike and Bret Easton Ellis, and to my shame, Dickens. Just can't get into his writing.

137842 Out of curiosity I looked at the 1001 list (helpfully a listopia of several editions of that book, so 1300 or so books listed), and I have read 110 of them. There were over 40 more authors that I have read, but not the book(s) listed.
The majority were books or authors I have never heard of, which is interesting, I probably won't try to tackle the list, as I have at least that many books on my shelves that I haven't picked up yet.
One of these days I need to get all of my books on the TBR or read lists. It will take me a minute or two to do that.

Sonia, yes, I remember that mpreg book. Just not my genre.
My rereads or re-listens are books that gave me happy in some way. I listen to the St. Mary's (Jodi Taylor) books at least once a year, and Watership Down, and Tam Lin, and Harry Potter, and Isaac Asimov, etc, etc. Rereads make my brain happy.

137842 Aw, Sammy, but then you miss gems like Interstellar super explorer.

I keep meaning to look at that 1001 book list, but haven't yet. Several organizations have come out with lists like that, so what made you choose that one?

137842 I think they are picking a few groups to allow emails on. I am certainly not getting them all yet. But, yay for some!
