I thought this was a clever little tale! I remember watching
Guys and Dolls with my mom when I was little and asking why the male characters (Nathan Detroit, Sky Masterson, Nicely-Nicely) spoke the way they did. My mom explained that was "Runyonesque". When I asked what "Runyonesque" was she went on to explain it was the name of the author of
Guys and Dolls. It was nice to read a Christmas tale in "Runyonesque"!

I read the story this morning and really enjoyed it. It's amazing to me when an author can make you fall in love with the characters in such a short time. As y'all have all mentioned my only quibble would be
(view spoiler)[the grown children leaving their own families at Christmas which became even more unfair when Guy's significant other showed up. (hide spoiler)]

Thank you for recommending this sweet story! I read it this morning and it was like stepping back into my childhood (even though this was my first Beatrix Potter story!). A touch of fantasy, a bit of Christmas - it was the perfect holiday mix!
