how about Laurence Fox (from the Inspector Lewis series)?

I've read almost all the Pendergast books (haven't gotten around to reading " Wheel of Darkness" yet) I've read "Cemetary Dance", and liked it (far more than I did "The Book of the Dead"), and was teary-eyed at their choice of victim. Nevertheless, looking forward to reading "Fever Dream"!

then there's the (perceived) supernatural element to the crimes, and the antagonist's use of it to cover up the fact that he/she is looking for "something"
