151367 Hey addicts is there anything you'd like to see happening in the clan? Anything we can do that would bring you back to the game (if you've been awol)?

Send me your ideas! Or better yet, log in to the game and say hi!

151367 I've been slack and haven't read this yet, but just got a kickstarter email about a project documenting the author (sorry can't link it from my phone) called Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin if any one is interested in checking it out.

151367 Go ahead and hijack!
I'm not sure if people are aware that they can also just add books to the groups shelves, but it's an option. you can even add why you're suggesting it, which is by no means an opposition to a suggestion thread, because I think it's important too.

151367 Thanks again Putzy, I keep hoping to be back soon, but then stuff crops up and repairs get waylaid... (missed most of the crimbo stuff because of it too :( )
151367 I read this last year as for another group. As a fan of the dark and twisted, I liked the premise. Keys opening portals to other dimensions, the sinister nature of the echo/Zack etc. The rest of the series has been on my to read list since then, hopefully I remember to pick it up again when I'm out of this reading slump/have a computer again.

And thanks Putz for taking over :)

151367 sorry guys, forgot to add the discussion for this. Happy reading!

151367 It's been so long (probably bordering on 20 years) since I read the Hobbit that I can't really compare this to the novel, though it seems quite similar to the movies to me.

The art was cute and suited the age of the story, but it was kinda boring.

Since my younger kids are daunted by the novel, I'm hoping they pick this up and realise how much better the story is outside of the movie franchise.

151367 I have been super slack about posting, but now that I'm done with uni for the year it's time I caught up...

I have to agree on the English front, but it's not just this book that bugs me with that, but I'll just pretend there's a babel fish in my brain and I'm good.

I liked the mix between old and new, and especially the fact that guns don't work... sure there's no explanation, but I'm ok with that because I don't like guns.

Charter magic was interesting, and I like the idea of the necromancy bells, I felt the 'free magic' was a bit of a last minute addition... maybe it's explained more in another book?

I quite enjoyed the story, even the romance bit was believable enough, sure they'd just met, but it's pretty common for people who share an intense experience, or who spend a period of time together will form a bond of some sort.

Was picking up the rest of the series for my eldest anyway, so I'll get around to reading it at some point.

151367 Or there and back again :D

151367 I wasn't fond of the second half of the book... Bastian turns into a douchebag. His change of appearance also changing his inner self. I understand it's a coming of age type plot, it just irked me. The way Atreyu and Falkor were treated during the march to the Ivory tower, the destruction of the tower itself... Urgh. Maybe I just want to keep imagining everything all sweet and nice and wholesome.

Reading this has reminded me that I still want a Falkor, I have much need of a luckdragon.

Tomorrow, I feel a Neverending Story marathon happening.

151367 I'm looking forward to this one. The eldest of my spawn received a copy for her birthday recently, so I don't even have to go searching for a copy :D
Also I'm a terrible person for not realising Garth Nix is an Aussie...

Thanks to whoever picked this for our group.

151367 This was one of my personal additions to the bibliophile's to read list. I had previously read Stevenson's Lumberjanes series and enjoyed her style and humour in that. I had not known this in its web-comic form, but all the same I had high expectations for this, I was not disappointed. I loved it!

I'm always for stories with a strong female protagonist, but this was even better! Nimona has no love interest, meaning she's not some love sick puppy. Nimona doesn't conform to the traditional conventions of beauty. She's not tall, nor slim, nor does she have an abundance of luscious locks. She's strong willed, intelligent, and doesn't let anyone tell her what to do. Even when Blackheart tries to get her to stick to the plan, she follows her own path.

I love that Blitzmeyer is so wrapped up in her work she doesn't have time for anything but tea and science. I love that the director of the institute is a woman who shows no mercy.

Goldenlion, the hero who wasn't pure, angelic and perfect. Blackheart, the villian who didn't want to kill anyone, whose intentions were ultimately good. I enjoyed the bromance between the two. Each never wanting to harm the other, never wanting to be rid of their nemesis.

The story line was well written and coherent, clever and clean. One I'm encouraging my girls to read, even if they're sick of me telling them they should read this or that.

5/5 stars.

151367 Aahah aahah aahah >.>
151367 So let me begin by acknowledging that Amanda Palmer isn't for everyone, she's brash, loud and unapologetic. I do like her and her work, even before she married that bloke who writes books sometimes.
I probably would have read this book even if the topic wasn't something I wanted to know more about.

For me, as someone who struggles at asking for help in general, let alone funds to help me produce my art and get it out there, it was quite interesting to see how someone else did just that.

I had previously watched her TED talk and had been intrigued with the ideas she laid out in those 12 minutes. How connecting and sharing has helped her fund one of the most successful Kickstarters in musical history. How by cutting out the middle man (in this case the record label) she has made a more reliable income for herself.

Her business model is unconventional, but it works for her. It's also worked for many other people, including Asymmetric (how many of us helped fund Wordrealms, Skully's comic, and by extension that clusterfuck of a card game), who listen and connect to their fan bases.

For me as an artist, it's a model I would like to try out for myself... someday when I get over the fear of asking.

All in all, I think people who aren't AFP fans could get something out of this. And if all else fails, you still get some anecdotes about Neil.

I can't remember how many stars I gave it (and I can't be arsed looking), was probably 5

151367 If anyone knows where I can find a copy of this online somewhere (without it costing a fortune), please let me know. My local library doesn't have it, and torrents have let me down :(
