Now, a nine year old can only come up with so much that can make their parents love them. Because, what nine year old should have to worry about that? That is not what children sign up for when they enter the world. But, anyhow, she cooked a few schemes she thought would work. They instead went terribly wrong and shall never be spoken of by the family again.

Fast forward two years, and she thought she was in love. Well, in like because love was still an icky thing for her at the time. Love failed. Liking, on the other hand, was easy water to wade through. His name was Jeremy and his lips tasted like candy. Probably because they were usually tainted blue from his sweet little ring pops that he's sometimes share with her. First kiss--totally accidental and not at all planned by the surprisingly forward girl who was under than him by a couple months, but looked like she was eight. It was a complex little plan that her friends got a kick out of, despite one or two thinking that it was a bad idea, which it was.

Details aren't necessary, but he broke her heart. Not really because she wasn't in love. She caught him sharing his ring pops in a whole other way, and her poor little eyes couldn't take it. She turned into a nearly Bella-from-Twilight-without-Edward-period type thing, but nothing was the same to her. She couldn't feel so much affection towards someone before they broke her heart or betrayed her, so she might as well save herself the trouble. She just let everyone go and focused on her studies.

Who would have thought that the girl who looked like a baby would land a scholarship in a school overseas? Certainly not her parents, who were all too glad to see her go. Tilda humphed and didn't bother with congratulations, Leo asked if she'd be able to wire him five bucks when she got over there, Patsie claimed the whole town would know by the time the day was done, and the twins kissed her ass. That was fun, but the other reactions weren't as satisfying or jovial. It was somewhat clear they would be happy to see her gone, and she didn't feel shame in being glad to leave. Win, win.

Once enrolled, Augusta felt a new freedom. She'd start fresh, have actual friends maybe, meet a guy, actually get older, and have fun. But, such was not the case. Instead, she's faced three years of torment from her peers--mostly the feers for some reason--and still isn't used to hearing all the wonderful British accents. She did, however, learn that her accent was something to make fun of, and her background would always be the butt of a joke. She slid back into the comfortable shell, coming out only a few times for interactions with people she considers to somewhat be her friends, and has just coasted.

She does, though, get a kick out of most of what goes down at the school. People think she's either stupid or oblivious, but she notices things. She just doesn't know when she's gonna be able to lord it over them.

Augusta has always been just a little more immaturely figured than her peers, but in the last year it changed pretty drastically. She figures it was a growth spurt that somehow made her seem like she was actually her age, filled in out those spots that she was lacking. Now, people decide to poke fun at the gap in her teeth, lack thereof between her thighs, and that extra bounce she's gotten. She supposed they be slightly nicer, but life just doesn't go according to plan (ie. her growth spurt). If life wasn't harder already, she's got just the faintest of stutters and a little bit of a lisp to go with her sweet little southern accent. She sounds like even more of a little kid, in her opinion.

On the subject of a style, Augusta will probably tell you she has none, because she feels like she doesn't. Long flowy skirts and tanks or shirts is basically the bulk of her attire. Flats or sneakers are usually her footwear, old and ratty. She doesn't do much shopping, since she's not one to be totally in line with the newest trends. She only really goes out to get what she views as a necessity, and that's lately only been new bras to fit the new cup size she's sporting.

█║▸ Augusta has always been playful, but a lot of people don't get to see that side of her. She's full of energy, just bottled up and ready to go. Like a domesticated animal trained to stay perfectly still. Why does she do this, you ask? Simply because she's gone several years mistreated by her classmates, and that sort of ruins the opportunity for her to exhibit this playful side. It is, apparently, social suicide to hang out with her. She's not sure why she was chosen--boredom? jealousy? She doesn't like to think about it, but she is an exceptional insightful person. Reading between the lines is her thing. It's what she thinks is the only good part of herself, but as stated before with her playfulness, you don't see her making comments often. It's only in the classroom that she really speaks, because she's expected to. Being quiet does have it's pros these days, though. No one really approaches her much, except a select few who seem to never have something nice to say. She doesn't draw attention to herself with being such a quiet person, leaving her to her own devices. It's not to say that she'd prefer to playful and loud, either, but it'd be nice every now and then. She just reaches a point where she's had enough of everyone and wants to be on her own.

█║▸ Inner turmoil is nothing new to Augusta. She's always been a conflicted person, dealing with contradicting decisions and thoughts, things that make sense at one point but don't at another. She second guesses herself at every turn, making things drawn out and complicated. She's not one to totally go with something because of a gut instinct, but it happens. And when it does, she feels off-kilter and odd, and goes back on whatever she's decided. In that regards, she's dependent on others to make decisions for. At a social standpoint, of course. She's always on academic flat ground, and never has to worry about choosing something there. There just so happen to be things that she can't do, and that's when she waits for someone else to step in.

How does one begin to explain the complexity of life to the simplest degree within a short span of time? It is, simply, not possible. Therefore, the history of a family long since crooked and mean in ways mostly fathomed in over active imaginations does not take a single sitting to get through. Unless, however, you are intent of never making it home until your next birthday. You must take the story in parts and pieces that you can digest, which was exactly how Augusta learned of the story that was her family: perspective by perspective. No one thought it was cute that she was digging, just thought that it was about damn time.

Her mother, simply put, was a hot mess stuck in last night's dress. They didn't come from money, but the family had been scheming for generations of the ways that they could land themselves in the lap of luxury. Most of the women in the family went out prowling for eligible bachelors of the wealthy sort, Augusta's mother included. She had the luck of actually landing such a man, catching him in her web and dooming to pay the minimal child support until not too long ago. The only thing was, he never stayed. He payed a small fee, and nearly had her mother removed from the face of the earth. Talk about ruthless, huh? Augusta's father, whose name she never learned from her mother but through a simple Google search, didn't want to tarnish his good name with a one night stand gone horribly wrong. So, he paid her mother to disappear from his life, and later for her to stop nagging him about the infant daughter he didn't give two shakes of a rat's ass about.

Dejected and upset, her mother gave birth to her in the backseat of a car along the interstate with a boyfriend she'd strung along during her search for a wealthier man. Poor guy thought the baby was his, until he caught Augusta's mother on the phone with the actual father of his daughter. Things got a little rough there. Her stepfather--he'd married his mother shortly after she gave birth to her--became the stereotype for the abusive white trash father, and her mother the white trash druggie that couldn't stand her daughter. Hell, her mother still can't really stand her. The girl had chosen brains over the beauty her mother suspected she'd passed on to her daughter.

When Augusta turned two, Harold left. Her stepfather just up and disappeared, then reappeared like a bad magic trick three years later. He was worse than he'd been before. Her mother always thought that he must have had a taste of something he like better--said in far less appropriate words to use around a five year old. Augusta never questioned it, though she did have a growing disease around the numerous men that circled her mother like vultures, but just played with the secondhand toys her mother sometimes remembered to get her when she was sober--which wasn't often enough for her to remember she had a child to care for.

The dysfunctional cast of characters continued to grow, however. Her grandmother hitched a ride and came to live with her junkie daughter and her cheating husband no later than a month after Harold left. Tilda was not a pleasant woman to be around until she'd had a drop of scotch, and her new attempt at sobriety meant that she'd make for one of those nasty, cranky grandmothers. Five year old Augusta couldn't stand the woman and her rattling cough, nor the looks she'd shot her. Mean, she was. Later, much much later, she'd find that her grandmother was the product of a nearly incestuous coupling because why not? Sure, let's marry our distant relatives.

Next came her uncle, who never seemed to hold down a job, and next was the whiny and ever gossiping aunt. Leo and Patsie, then Maggie and Sarah--the twins. Ugh. Augusta was most definitely not a fan of her cousins who seemed too posh for the family. They were stuck up and rude, simply because they'd come from a place where they had the privilege of having rooms of their own. Apparently, it was like owning one of those big fancy cars. Which made no sense to Augusta, because they'd gone from that to sharing a room with her and Tilda. That must have meant that something had shredded their little fantasy, and at six years old, she wasn't afraid to tell them. Because that's what little kids do: they say every little thing that's on their mind.

It turned that the results of that weren't all that great. Instead of becoming a super big kid, she got a chipped tooth and hot tears down her face. Obviously, the twins were used to having larger opponents in a two on one match, because they demolished every dream she might have had at seeming cooler to her cousins, maybe even knocking them down a few pegs like she saw on their old television before they had to sell it off to pay an electric bill they were behind on.

( ii )

By the time Augusta was eight, she taking care of herself, despite the presence of the twins who had been assigned to take care of her while her parents "worked". She figured it was code for them running off and fooling around instead of actually being parents. She had accepted this quite early on, actually, that they didn't love her like all her classmates' parents loved them. So, she decided that she had to do something that would make them see how special she was, and love her.
