153677 This is Altered, a dystopia novel about three teens who uncover a plot to control the populace through altering the nation's food.
Altered by Dianne Lynn Gardner

When Makia’s bags were filled he poured seed into Abree’s.

“Hurry, Makia. I’m getting a creepy feeling.”

“Shh.”

“Like I think I hear footsteps. Listen.”

Indeed the muted sound of boot heels on dirt came from the hallway. Makia and Abree ducked low in the shadows and against a table. Abree could see the crack of the entry, the gray uniformed figure approach, and the hand that touched the knob to close the door, and then hesitated.

“What do you see, soldier?” An accent. Abree held her breath. The ones with the accents were the worse.
Makia’s eyes were wide. He stooped, motionless.

“The seed room has been compromised, sir.” Officer Jenkins responded.

“So it has. Who keeps the key to this room?”

“I believe sir that the only key is kept in the commander’s office, sir.” Her voice was flat and complacent.

“That’s what I thought. Well, the evidence is mounting, isn’t it, Officer Jenkins?”

There was a pause in their conversation. Abree wondered why they weren’t entering the storeroom. Surely they suspected someone was in there. As much as she didn’t want to be caught, it seemed strange they would suspect a break in and not investigate. The reference to the commander sparked a new fear.

“What should we do, sir?”

The door creaked open wider and the sunburnt face of a well decorated officer peeked into the room.

“We will ask questions, Jenkins. We will ask many questions.” With that he stepped away, and the two left.

Intriguing Debra! I know you were raised by Lakota. Tell us a little about that.

153677 How about excerpts of your books? Post an excerpt (no more than 300 words please) of some exciting or passionate moment in your story and make sure you reference the book title!

153677 I hate ending a series. That's why Ian's daughter found a way into the Realm.

153677 Though we like to read about male characters that are flawed I'm seeing fewer and female characters with inward obstacles to overcome and more exterior obstacles, like having to prove to the world she's a strong fighter. Do you agree this is true? If so, why? Give us some examples maybe in real life as well as fictional.

153677 Here's an ongoing question. We all know that a semi flawed hero is more desirable than a perfect he-man because overcoming obstacles is part of what makes a good story. Tell us some of your favorite characters that you've read about. What names stick with you as you go about your day? What authors do you know can pull out a great main character?

153677 Alice Hoffman was recommended to me and so I read her latest book The Museum of Extraordinary Things. That book is similar in that there is romance, fantasy, and history. Her style is quite interesting. She certainly nails the historical descriptions.

153677 Yes, those cross genre stories make it difficult. Your books are listed here, aren't they?

153677 This is a fun topic. Feel free to give us links of your shorts on your blogs or where ever. Give us a little synopsis. I did a series of short describing some of my characters and their back story in Cassandra's Castle on my blog. I need to get back to that again. Also post links to those great short story competitions. And I'd love if you want to include some calls for short stories for anthologies.

153677 I haven't read a lot of thrillers. I am kind of a timid person and when I see something scary in print it stays with me for way too long. But this genre is extremely popular, so I'm hoping to hear about some great reads here. G Mitchell Baker sort of broke the ice for me. He has a unique voice. A good book that Lethal Believers.

153677 I'm partial to SF and Fantasy stories so I started this section to discuss the amazing world of SF and Fantasy. There are some pretty cool SF writers with MKSP. Digitus 233, Kim Mutch Emerson's YA book is a great dystopian read. Tell us some of your favorites!

153677 Welcome Brian. Maybe someday you'll write again. Never say never. But reading is wonderful!

153677 What is one classic book that is your favorite that has somehow touched your life?

For me it was Little Women. Of all the characters there were to choose from, my favorite was Beth because she loved home. I'm not sure if this book gave me a deeper appreciation for where I am (though I wasn't here when I first read it) but I think it caused me to think more about the simple things.

153677 Well I'm a reader too, though I didn't state that in my last intro. I don't read fast, and I'm really busy half the time but when I get into a good book I don't put it down until it's finished.
