I crashed through all of Ilona Andrews' Edge books while i was away and...they were great, but not up to Kate Daniels' adoration levels for me. I'm not a big fan in general of series that switch their main characters every book? LIKE i can enjoy them once i get into them, but there's always that wall to jump over for me to actually...get into them.AND i just started Longbourn, which is a retelling of Pride & Prejudice from the POV of one of the housemaids. One day i'll read the actual P&P instead of one million adaptations, but not this day
We had a pretty good run! But i think the book a month part of ignite the books has wound down quite a bit, and honestly, i am a very forgetful person who is bad at putting up polls and drumming up enthusiasm.i appreciate everyone's contributions, and have enjoyed the butts out of all the conversation we've had. please continue to use the other thread topics to talk about shit!
This one is a Star Wars Legends book (otherwise known as the Expanded Universe). So it's not considered canon any longer, but familiarity with the first three movies (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) will probably help (although i'm also super curious to know if the book is still accessible/interesting if you haven't seen the movies)
This month's book is This post is for the all purpose discussion of Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor. You can post thoughts as you go, or save it all up for one big review. You are not required to like the book - feel free to say you loved it, hated it, everything in between. Be as general or weirdly specific as you like.
Obviously, this post will have spoilers, so if you prefer to go into books blind, don't read past this post until you're done! Otherwise, venture forth and nerd out.
JUST A HEAD'S UP i have clearly sucked for the month of january, being away for the last part of decemberSO i am calling a break for january, and would like to open up recs for feb! the ones listed above will be included in the voting for that month
just finished blackbirds by chuck wendig andhated it? mostly
which i'm upset about because i like chuck wendig a lot and his advice has been extremely helpful to me
but god that book was not even a little bit for me

i had mine set to 100 but stopped reading (for some reason???) a few months ago. so i've revised it to 75 because i don't think 100 is a feasible number for me anymore anyway :'D
the space vampire is fun, but honestly I'm so tired of dudes being all up in ladies faces in paranormal stuff. ~I am a sexy vampire swoon already.Curran I think was easier to deal with because the narrative straight up treats him as an asshole and doesn't expect us to think otherwise. with both Sean & space vampire I felt too much like the book was pushing them at me all 'swoon, bitch'
Still working my way through that essay collection, but i am at least satisfied that i am not the only person in the world who reads too much into symbolism. there is an essay on cars (it's great).i'm also listening to the audiobook for Clean Sweep. it's...idk i'm enjoying it and i love the mc? but holy shit i could not give any less fucks about the dude characters if i tried.
i am wondering if it's a function of listening to the book via audio? it automatically slows everything down, i think this book is better served by binging it in a 4 hour chunk instead of stretching it out over a couple of days.
ALSO stuff i'm working on:Sleeping Gayly has its third and a half outline, and i have started tentatively on the first chapter again. honestly i am terrified of working on this thing at this point LMAO i cannot seem to get it right. hopefully this time will go better!
i also have a greek myth project in which i am trying out short stories for the first time properly. they're all loosely connected, set in the modern world. so far i have ariadne and dionysus banging in a club bathroom and aphrodite tearing paris' throat out, it's great.
next up is hera the divorce lawyer, demeter the climate change activist, and hestia the agoraphobic. together, they drink wine.
i'm gonna give novlr a try! it seems a little neater than scrivener, although i really badly want to make scrivener work for meeta hahaha changed my mind the line spacing is pissing me off STICKING WITH GDOCS I GUESS
This month's book is The Palace Job by Patrick Weekes. It's currently available on amazon for like $4 so i recommend getting it there tbh. This post is for the all purpose discussion of The Palace Job. Diana wrote: "Hannah, I am very interested in this collection of VM essays."the collection is Neptune Noir: Unauthorized Investigations into Veronica Mars! i'm finding it a really interesting read because it was actually put together before the series ended? so it's interesting on one level for the writing about VM, but also interest as an insight to like...how people were viewing the cultural context nearly a decade ago.
I didn't end up rereading this over November because a) i suck and b) what is free time, but I did read it pretty recently.I'm curious to know how...readable people found it? The biggest thing that has stuck with me after reading The Raven Boys (and the other two that are out so far) is that like. they are absolutely gorgeously written but man what the fuck is going on"??
So what are your favourite parts of the book? How understandable did you find it? If you haven't read the rest of the series, does the first book make you want to read the others? Why/Why not?
i have fallen right back into audiobook hell and am listening to Super Mario: How Nintendo Conquered America by Jeff Ryan. It's very listenable! i have also acquired a bunch of Tudor and Plantagenet history books that i plan on listening to over the next few months, because i need some history back in my life tbh and it's SO MUCH EASIER to consume via audiobook than to actually read.
i'm also reading a collection of essays on veronica mars because that's how i roll
last call for recs this month! i might toss another one in there to make up others if nothing else comes through <3
