Yeah I agree - I love that not only do we see what the Magisters are doing in the abstract, but we get a brave human face to it (as does Kamala). Great moral dilemma.

It IS bleak, and was stated above, sadly believable. I'm reading it on the kindle, and although I liked the journal parts, the font was a bit difficult for me to read (at least at the same speed).I've always enjoyed reading this type of books - they make me think/wonder what I would do in a similar situation. Although I'd probably just be in the 99% that died =)
If we all felt the same way about books, discussing them would be quite boring =). I am totally unable to be objective about Cordelia, but I realize that, and you have some good points, especially about the rape scenes and aftermath!Hmm...I may have missed the being drugged by Aral part. The only incident I can think of is when he told her (and Ililyan) that he drugged her when she was asleep and discovered the military tech. If I remember correctly, she pretty quickly figured out he was lying about drugging her and he already knew about the tech. But that is true that she wasn't furious with him even at first.
I did like that she blew up the ships phasers at her first escape because she knew he'd have to fire on her ship otherwise. It was just smart.
And I guess the Betans (and her mother) had good reason to be worried about her. As I read the book, I was frustrated with them, but after reading your comments - well, they were completely right from their point of view.

I hadn't thought about that - it is very true! I'm glad you shared that. And I suppose the same goes for Miles, who is SUCH a strong character, and certainly not a typical one.
I think Cordelia was one of the first strong women characters I encountered in science fiction. I've since found others, but she will always have a special place in my heart.

I've read this several times as well - it is not my favorite of the series, but the series itself is one of my favorites!
I'm going to try to get this one in - I keep hearing about it, and it'd be more fun to read it with a group!
I'm going to try to fit this one in during the month but it'll probably be a week or two before I can start.

I really liked the exploration about what it means to be normal, and I thought Lou was a terrific character.
