Personality: Carter can be described a number of ways, but the most common descriptors are "arrogant," "lazy," and "strange." And those are all extremely accurate. He's a bit of a freak. Somewhat of a creep, even. Dare I say... a weirdo? What the hell is he doing here? Destroying the family name, that's what. He comes from a long line of money, but he doesn't have the same prestige, the same sense of conservativism, that the rest of his family has. He's vulgar; he says dumb shit; he's never serious ever; he does whatever he wants all the time; he openly brags about hooking up with people. He really does not care what other people think of him. He himself thinks he's pretty great. He's carefree; he's just kind of vibing. Does it hurt that his siblings don't like him? Yeah. Does it suck that people don't take him seriously all the time? Yeah. But like... he fucks. so. Who cares.

Really, on a deeper level, there is a bit more to him. Despite seeming like a total bum, he does have things he cares about. He has interests and likes and dislikes and can have some radically interesting opinions. He sees things very differently from other people and can offer an interesting perspective on a lot of concepts. But also he'd probably say the sun is his favorite planet so you take what you can get you know?

History: Carter was born into a super rich family: ie, the Carters. Their wealth was first acquired by their grandfather (mother's side) who made several breakthroughs in the medical field: cured an infectious disease, invented a vaccine or two, started his own research company.... something like that. Carter is pretty uninterested in the whole thing. Always has been. Partially because his grandpa is a dick but mainly because his family is kinda... full of people who are good at science? And are smart? And he is not.

He was always the odd one. His grandfather had his science shit going on, his older brother excelled at business and finances and took over the company his grandfather started, his little sister is a biology prodigy, and Carter... failed every class in school. The only major accomplishment he's had is getting second place in the third grade art contest because he cried and got pity points when the judges said his sea monster painting was very creative (it was supposed to be his mom). Like, look, he does not have that much to offer - academically or artistically. He really is just kind of useless. His grandpa thinks so and his siblings think so (his older brother really hates him). They especially hate that he calls himself Carter, because it feels like a loser is stealing the family name. Which he thinks is very funny.

Really, the only person that ever seemed to get Carter was his mom. She liked his quirkiness; she thought he was funny and sweet in his own way; she thought his third grade painting was beautiful; she was always there for him. She spent the most time on him growing up, something his siblings never understood. To this day, Carter would say she's his best friend. Like, yeah, she died of cancer eight years ago but only a coward would be afraid to say their dead mom is their best friend.

Since then, he's just kind of been scraping by. His siblings are annoyed he contributes nothing and constantly say they're only supporting him because its what their mom would have wanted. And to be honest, he probably only made it on the ship because of family name. And because he got a good word in from his grandfather! Obviously not because he loves him so much. Carter recently told a media outlet that his grandfather was going senile and peed on their family rug, which was a blatant lie (he doesn't get why no one else thought it was funny), so... his grandfather really preferred him on another planet.

Other: Goes exclusively by Carter. Unless you're mom, who calls him Samson. But mom's dead so he goes exclusively by Carter.

Space was Kris' first love. From a very young age, he became obsessed with the stars and planets and binged every space documentary, movie, and book he could get his hands on. As a little kid, he would sit in front of the screen and rewatch advertisements for commercial ships - over and over and over again, ones just like the Andromeda, whose engineers he would later come to idolize. This love was encouraged by his grandfather who shared an interest in not only space, but also the ships: how they were built and how they functioned.

This encouragement brought along Kris' second love: engineering. While he watched the movies and documentaries, he'd build his own little prototypes and machines and learn about how the ships that he loved actually worked. He'd spent countless hours learning how the machines around him functioned, blowing things up in the process, but getting really good at fixing them afterward.

But he didn't get there alone. He got there with the third great love of his life: his best friend, Non. The two have been inseparable since they were kids. They both love science, they both love space, they both made plans to go there together as mechanical engineers onboard the Andromeda. And while they both applied day one for the position (Kris had been obsessively tracking the application date), only one got the engineering position. And it wasn't Kris.

He hates that he only got an apprenticeship. He's been upset about it the whole year, although not as openly as he has been recently. He understands why, maybe: his grades weren't as amazing as Non's, he doesn't do well in anything he's not super passionate about, unlike Non, and he didn't get the same internship Non did. But he cares about it so much. It's all he's ever wanted. It's his dream. And maybe he's a bit upset that someone else is living it for him - even if it was one they'd always shared.

It's just that he has a tendency to play on the defense much quicker than most people.

But once this wall is broke through, there is a caring and fun-loving individual on the other side, one that is fueled by passion and authenticity, and one that knows exactly what their dreams are and how much they want them. Fjord's shirt was wet. He could feel it. The fabric was thin: it soaked up every one of Trista's tears as she wrapped her arms around him and buried her face deep in his chest. Twenty minutes ago, she'd stood on tip-toes to give him a ghost of a smile across the crowd. Now, her back shuddered.

Fjord didn't cry. He didn't think he could, even if he wanted to━and if he'd wanted to, it wouldn't have been for him. It would have been for Trista or Hudson, taking a nap in their small home on the dock, or for the boy seven years ago. The one that died with a spear in his throat.

Fjord thought about him as he stood silent in the small justice room. His name had been River and he'd had light hair and a warm smile, two sisters, and an elderly mother. His mom had passed away five years ago, but in those two years, she'd had more than enough time to let Fjord know how much she hated him. He didn't blame her. He'd hate him too. After all, if he'd volunteered that day like he was supposed to—if he'd been less selfish, if Trista hadn't gotten pregnant, if he hadn't fucked around—then maybe her son would still be alive. Maybe they both would be.

So it was only fair that Fjord's name got called. Quarter Quell bullshit or not.

The sound of doors opening brought him back to the room. Peacekeepers in their sterile white uniforms pulled Trista off him. It wasn't easy. She was a small woman, but her kicks still packed a heavy punch. It took a full minute and a half to drag her out. The doors began to lurch shut, but the two made eye contact just before. Trista's eyes were red. Fjord's were dark.

He'd win: for her, for their son, and for the boy with the spear in his throat.

It was only fair.
