Before Krebs goes off into war he in considered a "Frat Boy" which basically means that he is the "Life of the party!" but he is also considered to be obnoxious but when he goes off into war we notice that in "Soldier's Home" Krebs comes back and has no care for any individual back home. Krebs feels like the most important thing in his life was the war and feels that since he accomplished that that he has basically done what he needed to do in life. But since Krebs is so young his mother tries to get involved in his life by trying to push him in the direction to make it better and more fulfilling than just going to war. Basically the transformation from "Frat Boy" to soldier changed him for the good but he still needs to put his life back together due to the fact that all he knew was war for a while.
