Janet wrote: "Maybe but I also wondered about his own upbringing. It was mentioned a few times. He had a lot of anger. Why didn't Uncle Weldon if they were raised in the same house?"I was just thinking about the difference between Rose's father and uncle. I wonder if it was because Rose's father was older..even if only by a couple of years...and saw and comprehended more of the ugliness that went on. It is typical of older children to should responsibilities that aren't necessarily theirs...
It's also written from the perspective of a boy with autism and an obsession with prime numbers...and a mystery about a dog...and his relationship with his dad. It received a lot of recognition when it came out several years ago. I remember really liking it.

I am curious to know if any of you have someone close to you who is "on the spectrum." I have a teenaged cousin with Aspergers and she has really struggled in her family life...to the point that she moved away from a loving and responsible mother to live with her grandparents on a ranch where they could accommodate horses. She really connects with animals and interacts with them much better than she does with people.

I believe that it is a characteristic of autism to have little voice inflection because of social disconnect/emotional intuition, so the audio reader must have done a nice job!

Rain was the catalyst for a lot of things! She softened the edges of Rose's life and relationships, and was like a guinea pig for Rose to practice social interaction.

I think it was masterful in that it was told from such a unique perspective! It reminds me so much of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime," but geared toward young teens. I think it does deserve the awards!!!

Although he didn't handle Rose well, I think he did know what to expect from her. And although he couldn't provide what she needed, I think he knew what she needed. It was just difficult for him to admit to himself that he wasn't it. I don't think he will ever assume primary guardianship of her again, although he may return to her life at some point. Thank goodness for her sweet uncle! Not a lot of 31 year-old bachelors would be like him!

I feel like this book was more about the people in Rose's life than it was about hers. I keep trying to analyze her father and "read between the lines" of Rose's perspective. Why do you think he chose to tell Rose all that time that her mother had left her?
