I'll be finishing part one of the book today! So far I am really liking it and that is all I will say for now!
I'm on page 17, hahaaa! But I got it yesterday so I will start getting into soon! Take your time K! I can wait too and Lord knows how long it'll take me to read it! :)
We can always wait! I forgot that this would be a very busy time for you. Also, I'm such a slow reader I feel you would still beat me in finishing it! ;P
Hello ladies! It has been awhile since we last talked on here. I remember us possibly reading another book together, specifically Jane Steele, and wanted to know if you guys would like to still do that?
Let me know!
It is so interesting to see a book you hate be turned into something decent. I usually hate watching adaptations of most of the books I read and never am pleased by it. This sounds like it could be the exception.HOWEVER, I too would be wanting to rave and rant when watching it and telling the world how stupid Quentin is and how the book is nothing like the show.
I laughed out loud at your marble comment. It is so true that TV would have to change a lot of the monotony of the book to make it likable, but it shouldn't even be based on the books then. GROSSman probably thinks he is a genius and super cool now for having a show based off his books, but the show sounds like its own entity, so he shouldn't be proud. His book had such promise, which SyFy saw, and then they decided to improve it. I can only imagine how annoying the first episode is if he wrote it.
I am glad you witnessed it, so you could report back. If it ever enters Netflix realm then I may watch an episode just to scoff at it and text you two in the middle of the night about how much I hate it.
My one co-worker is named Quentin and it really kills me to say his name, because all I think of is whiny Magician's Quentin.
I think college-age adults, specifically nerdy male ones. Did you guys read about his other books? He also wrote a Trekkie type novel and then got caught writing positive Amazon reviews of his own book when critics panned it. I think it was Amazon.

Haha, I love the idea of you eating Quentin! The end of the book, despite a final plot, was even worse than the beginning. I hate all the characters even more than before and whoever thought this should be published needs to get their act together. It wasn't the worst read, so it got two stars, but what a disappointment! So much promise!
I already know I couldn't watch the show because if the try and make Quentin like-able , which they will, I will go into a rage. He is so self-centered! It was killing me how he was so made at Alice for sleeping with Penny and acted like he did NOTHING wrong. Also, anything that should've been epic (releasing of back demons etc) was not.
I'm going to read how the rest of this series plays out right now. These books can only get worse with Quentin being the "hero".
Oh I'm loving these comments so much! I'm on page 280 and I want Quentin to die a horrible death and have the story be all about Antartica. This book is almost all filler and it definitely is a Marty-Stu, although I like K's Mary-Sean better, and a bad one at that. This is the drivel filled fanfic that you stumble upon one late night and read so you can laugh at it.
I'm honestly thinking that this Fillory stuff should've happened much sooner, because after Antartica I needed the plot to keep moving and it died.
I liked the aspects of real life and a magic school, so it's not too Harry Potter, but it begins to just get lame and frustrating. Grossman could've made this book really great if he wasn't so busy with his lame character development. His characters all pretty much suck. I liked Alice for awhile, but now she's annoying me as well. Like, why didn't you break up with that loser?
I'm interested to read the last chapter because it sounds like it plays out fairly simple and el to require me reading anymore of this books. I'm definitely going to read the plots for the next two in hopes that Quentin dies.
Did I mention how much I hate Quentin? Haha!
I am almost at the 100 page mark, but I would like to get another 50 pages in before really discussing it (characters etc). With that being said, did you find the plot took awhile to really get moving? I just feel like nothing really interesting has happened yet.
This book sounds very interesting! I like the writing style and the dialogue bit was funny. Has the series ended or will there be more?
This sounds great, because my book will be in by tomorrow! I can definitely start it by Sunday. I have this odd feeling that I will be the last to finish this book! :P
I understand the guilty feeling. I am very stubborn about finishing books, especially if I get past the first 50 pages (my recent read was this exact scenario). However, life is too short to waste on mediocre books when there are so many better ones out there! The only time I try to stick it out is when it is a piece of classic literature, so I can a) better defend my hatred of it to the fans and b) for jeopardy/trivia questions.
I've quit a bunch in recent years by just leaving on my shelf, bookmark still in them, and with the idea of finishing at some point of my life. I even have a few that I found interesting, but just drifted away from due to being too busy and then forgetting about it!
My friend said his first book was really good, but it sounds like a different feel from the one I read. His first book had more personal anecdotes than gender stereotyping of music. So, I think she liked him in the first book and this probably helped mask some of his douche ways.My friend did say she didn't like his second book as much, but didn't dislike it. I have to say it isn't my most hated read, but it isn't anything I'd ever recommend. EVER.
I have been struggling to finish this book for two months now. My friend loved his first book (Love is a Mixed Tape, which seems to have much better reviews) and this one and mentioned them to me. Having been interested in reading more anecdotal tales involving music, I picked this one up first and am seriously disappointed. He opens the book with an introduction that just comes off as sexist and continues to write things that rub me the wrong way. I don't think he even realizes how douchey he is sounding and get this odd feeling that he would be shocked to have people point this out to him. Here are a few examples:
"Girls like to talk, and if you are a boy and you want to learn how to listen to girl talk, start a conversation and keep it going, that means you have to deal with Duran Duran" (note: I hate Duran Duran and he brings up 20x how much women love them)
"This is just the way we [men] dissect the things we love. But it's tougher to talk to women about the Clash. (They love "Stand by Me" but they don't care that it's really called "Train in Vain" instead of "Stand by Me.")"
And it goes on. I honestly think it is his attempt at humor, but it comes of annoying. He doesn't completely plague the book with these horrible comments, but it made the read even more unpleasant.
I am 50 pages from being done with the book and probably from any other future books of his.
(Also, can I just say how much I love the group rules)
