When Prince Kythar (KYTH) invites his elite Majat bodyguard KARA to a remote castle courtyard for a weapon practice, he hopes for a chance to show off his growing sword skill and – possibly – strike her fancy. But instead of KARA he is greeted by hooded men, wielding exotic and dangerous weapons and seemingly intent on capturing him at all cost. KARA belatedly appears at the scene to save KYTH in the nick of time and drive the attackers off. She captures a hostage and questions him, to learn the frightening news: the attackers belong to the ancient Kaddim Brotherhood of mind control sorcerers. After centuries of near-extinction, the Brotherhood is on the rise and is bent to destroy KYTH’s royal line.

KYTH’s father, King EVAN, holds a council to define the plans. KARA will accompany the Prince to the Majat Guild to secure the services of an elite Diamond-ranked bodyguard who will protect him from the Kaddim. KYTH is determined to negotiate for Kara, finding it unbearable to part with her. In the mean time, the King will travel to the residence of Duke Daemur ILLITAND to secure the nobleman’s support and maintain peace in the kingdom. He will bring along Mother Keeper, the leader of the powerful Order of Keepers, and her new apprentice ELLAH, a common girl with the recently discovered gift of truthsense.

On the road, KYTH and his party are dogged by a mysterious man, NIMOS, who shows up at random times to threaten the prince and mock his Majat escort, and drives Kara mad to the point of losing control. At the same time, King EVAN is pursued and driven into the wilderness by the men who pose as Holy Knights but are identified by ELLAH as imposters. The King’s Diamond-ranked Majat bodyguard, MAI, shows incredible skill in saving the party from a number of threats and bringing them safely to Castle ILLITAND. Upon arrival, ELLAH spots a man in the inner castle courtyard who looks just like the Kaddim who had attacked KYTH.
