195512 Tough call. I'd say I'd go to my favorite story as a unique character. That way, if I come back (big "if" there), I'd have some cool tricks up my sleeve.

Would you rather write poorly, but be really rich, famous and well known because of it?
Or
Be the best writer in the world and have no one know your name or writing?

195512 How about the ever classic opening line: "It was a dark and stormy night"?

Or maybe a secret agent talking to a not-so-villainous villain.

195512 So, do we post our entries here? Since I didn't see a designated contest entry thread for the weeklies, I guess that's what we do. So, here's my entry for the prompt of "A man wakes up in a different place than he went to sleep in":

The ground was hard and cold. There was rock under his knee, and a tiny little root was just under the middle of his back. Neither of those bothered him too much. No, what bothered him was the fact that he had gone to sleep in a bed. His bed, to be more precise.
Last night had gone wonderfully. He had gone out to a nice new club. He hadn’t drunk anything but soda water, but it was still a nice place. The music was actual music, and was played at a volume that would not result in premature hearing loss. He had even met a lady there. She was great. Really pretty, good to talk to, and they had plenty of common ground.
They had not gone home together, but he didn’t mind, since he had gotten her phone number. That was perfect for a lady like her. He would need to court her good and proper, which was just what he was looking for.
What was her name? It was odd, but he couldn’t quite recall it. It was an ‘M’ name, he knew that. Meredith maybe? He had asked, of course, but for some reason he simply couldn’t remember. He put it out of his mind, since it wasn’t immediately important. If he played his cards right, he could relearn—and hopefully remember—her name on their first official date. He had gone home to his modest apartment fully intending to call her the very next day. He wanted to get the relationship off right, after all.
That was the plan, at least. Now he was in a forest. He checked everything nearby. He had everything he had gone to sleep with on him. That amounted to little more than his pajamas, but those were oddly comforting.
He stood and looked around. He was definitely in the woods. Only, it was eerily quiet. There were no birds. No insects. Not even the leaves rustled in the breeze. Not that there was any breeze to make them rustle, but still. There was simply no sound at all.
“Hello?” He called to the empty trees. “Is anyone there?”
“I am.” Said a voice. It was a familiar voice. It was the lady he had met the night before.
He turned and, sure enough, there she was. What was her name? Megan? Molly? He wished he could remember. But still, she was quite an attractive young lady. Curly, reddish-brown hair. Piercing black eyes. Porcelain skin. A classical beauty if there ever was one.
“Oh, thank god.” He said, glad to see a familiar face, particularly one like hers. “I thought I was alone out here.”
“No, no. Don’t worry, I’m here with you. Well, for awhile anyway.”
That last part was odd, but he ignored it. “So, uh, any idea where we are?” He asked while looking at their surroundings.
“Oh yes, I’m quite familiar with this place. It is mine, after all.”
“Really? Great. Any idea how we got here then?” He figured she was the owner of the land. That meant she would be able guide him out easily enough. Although, the fact that she owned the land he had woken up on was an odd coincidence. But, then again so was her sudden appearance.
“I brought you here.”
“Okay, that’s…actually, that’s a little creepy. How’d you know where I live?”
“No need to worry about that.”
“No, I’m serious. Did you follow me home or something? And how did you get me here without waking me up?” He was starting to get a little worried. She might have been turning out to be a psycho stalker type person. One with access to drugs. Never a good combo.
“I could tell you, but that would lead to far more questions than I’m currently willing to answer. Maybe I’ll tell you later. Or perhaps you’ll figure it out on your own.”
“Uh, right.” He took a few steps back. He nearly tripped over an exposed root, but managed to correct his footing before falling. Had that root been there before? He wasn’t sure. “So, listen...uh, I’m really sorry, but I don’t quite remember your name.”
She put on a hurt look that was clearly false. “Well now, and here I thought you liked me. I am very disappointed in you, Arthur.”
“Uh, w-well, I…” He said, stumbling over his own tongue. She laughed lightly at his flustered attempt at speech.
“Oh don’t worry too much about it. I’m sure there’s a very good reason for your forgetfulness. And I suppose a quick reminder couldn’t hurt. My name is Morgan. Morgan Le Fey.”

195512 Okay, a writing prompt...Let's do this:

A man wakes up on in a completely different place that he went to sleep in.

A story that starts with "The sun woke him/her up before the alarm did." and ends with "All he/she knew was he/she was going to be doing a lot of explaining in the morning."

Open Contests (10 new)
Aug 24, 2016 12:41PM

195512 Okay, let's get the ball rolling then.

Contest number: 1

Contest: Super short stories.
The goal here is to write a complete story using 100-300 words. It can be any genre, as long as they adhere to the rules of Writingtowne, Goodreads, and contests in general (in other words, keep it clean).

Contest run: 8/24-9/10

Extra info: Stories should have at least a beginning and an end. The middle will most likely be blended into those two due to length. A small amount of wiggle room in the upper limit is allowable, but try and stick to the limit. You don't need to include the word count in your entry, but it can't hurt either.

I should probably have done this awhile ago, but I guess I should list a prize, right? This one's tricky, so a solid nine word dollars is a good amount, right? Let me know if this is too much or if me making the amount is not cool.

195512 That moment when you think a book you've published will do great after getting a few reviews, but it still goes nowhere.
195512 Cool. Thanks! I already have an idea for my own open contest, so this should be interesting.
195512 This seems interesting. I'm not sure how many of these I'll enter, but I can try for one or two. Quick question though, when do contests officially start? Next week? In two weeks? Or have they already started and people can now make an open contest right now?
