Hello demigio! It would be lovely to see you at BB. Posting regularly is nice, but isn't expected. And if you restrict yourself to a couple of threads, easy to keep pace with. We're all busier these days.
Nancy wrote: "Glad to hear that about Wolf Hall, Miriam. I still wonder what the big deal is, and wonder why I don't get it. Goodreads occasionally pops me to the beginning of the thread, and I, despite years of posting to forums, didn't notice and replied to a post you made in 2010. (clueless, I am)
I'm very happy to get together with the smaller group, I'd prefer a smaller group too, I just naturally tend towards inclusion . . .
April, I'm sorry to hear about the surgery.
So? Is the general consensus for Nancy's? Lauren, who suggested the idea, hasn't posted recently.
(Kat, the feeling is mutual)
I'm avoiding reading the end of The Goldfinch, so I'm not really anything except Entertainment Weekly. Nancy, I didn't love Wolf Hall has much as others here did -- I loved parts of it, but I found much of it a slog. I think we should figure out the location and date for our get together sooner rather than later. I need to start planning and saving. I've checked the cost of plane fare and Chicago, Boston, New York, Georgia -- it's all about the same price, so I don't care where we meet. I like the warmth but I'm not too fussed by cold and my primary reason for traveling is to see you all so let's pick a time and place that will work for the majority (or all) of us. I also think we should let people who are on Bookballoon but aren't here know, so they can come too if they'd like. (please forgive me being bossy, but I really want this to happen!)
That's my question too ("would Kennedy be best"). I like the idea of flying into NY. I've never been and would probably add a couple of days to trip so I could see some art or listen to some music either on the way home or on my to our get together.
My budget isn't huge but I'll stretch it as far as I can. I'd also love it if it happened sometime after the new year because, like Lisa, I need some time to search the couch cushions. Plus there are work/family commitments that make the next little bit tricky.
Lisa, it messed with my mind about 4 months ago, but that has mostly settled out. It's odd isn't it? Getting older? Better than not, most days, but age is so implacable and so unavoidable. Karen, are you commenting in our age? If so, gracias. Youthful verve rules!
Ha! Very funny Nancy! (as well as a rather brilliant idea)Thank you Karen and Lisa. I'll be half a century, which kind blows my mind, but I'm quite relaxed about it.
Goldfinch is now home; the librarians and I were commenting on how heavy it is.
Goldfinch is waiting for me at the library. Of course, because now I have too many books to read in a reasonable amount of time. Ah well. It's my birthday weekend (sort of), so maybe I'll just make time to power through two books.
Me too Luann. Lauren it's the only Fowler I've read so I don't knowing my liking it is anomaly or not. Longbourn is good so far.
That's because you haven't read (or more accurately, rated any of the books on their list). We have 11 books in common and are 88% compatible with those books, so that's pretty good.
A large number of books in that list I read in my teens and twenties. If Great Expectations is any indication I should re-read most and then rate.
I knew I was the odd duck here, but it is rather disconcerting to see it laid out so baldly. You all love me anyways right?
I haven't checked yet (but will in minutes) so I don't know what my scores are, but I'm not surprised by your's Karen's. It's what I would expect. I know just from experience that I'm a bit off from you and Lauren and Lisa. I suspect that we all influence each other's tastes. I'd be a bit closer to exPat and Catherine if they were here. I was really close to Karen Templar's taste. When she liked it a book it almost always worked.
I am Karen. It drags a bit here and there. But overall, its interesting. I keep wanting to read a DFW review of the book though. I'm not surprised to hear that he is quite nasty on the court. He really has a hard time losing, and dislikes a majority of players he plays against. He respected Sampras, hated Becker and Chang (the reason why is funny). I think he keeps himself pretty isolated from that world (or as much as he can. It doesn't help that he declares over and over again that he hates tennis.
My library has Tinkers, or is getting it, and I've put a hold on it. And I just put a request in for Risk Pool. I seem oddly fixated on family or small type/foible-filled drama, so it might be just right for right now. Sweet is good too.
