201703 Question: Identify significant moments within the text. Why are the important?’

In Darren Shan’s horror fiction book, “Hell’s Heroes” a significant moment within the text is when Bec sides with Lord Loss and the Shadow. Bec McConn is a 1,600-year-old girl who is the memory of the Kah-Gash, which is a mythical weapon that has the potential to destroy the human universe or the demon universe. When the universe was first created it was a living thing that has tried to protect both universes but has failed due to the blood thirst of the Demonata. Due to the bloodthirstiness of the Demons, the Kah-Gash fractured into three different pieces which for the next several billion years moved between the two universes inhabiting various life forms. However, the three pieces were found in the same universe and time period inhabiting Kernel Fleck, Grubbs Grady, and Bec McConn. Kernel is the eye of the Kah-Gash and Grubbs is the trigger of the Kah-Gash. When all three pieces are combined it can perform feats of magic. When Bec was captured by Lord Loss, she found no purpose to keep fighting and decided to help the Demons. Grubbs says, “ ‘What have you done?’ I growl. ‘Have you pledged yourself to that foul hunk of rotting demon meat?’ ‘We can’t beat them,’ she sighs. ‘Everybody realizes that except you,’ ” (73). This is significant because Bec who once hated Demons is now helping the Demons get to their goal, which Bec once tried to prevent. Unlike Grubbs who still believes that they can win, Bec has already given up without even trying. This is drastically different from how she used to be sixteen hundred years ago when she was willing to fight until she died just so the world could keep on moving on. Not only is this a significant character change but it gives the Demonata a upper hand to winning this war. It might be a turning point in this billion year old war, and the Demons might annihilate the human universe. Nevertheless, a significant moment in the text was when Bec joined Lord Loss and the Shadow.

Focus: What I wanted to improve on was my context. It was hard for me because I was reading a series, and it was hard to put all of the information from the books into a few sentences. In the end, I put the most important information that someone should know before reading my evidence and analysis.

201703 Question: What motivates your character?

In the horror-fiction book, “Demon Apocalypse”, by Darren Shan, Grubbs is motivated by the future of the world. Grubbs, a teenager living in a world where demons are real and they kill humans every so often. However, there are ways to stop these demons and that’s where magicians, mages, and the Disciples play their role. These people dedicate their life to protect the world from demons, and it just so happens that Grubbs is a magician, and magicians are rare and powerful. At the moment the world is susceptible to being overrun by demons due to an open “window” connecting the demon world and the earth, and Grubbs is willing to sacrifice his life for the millions of people worldwide. Grubbs says “If I don’t let him kill me, it would mean fighting to survive in a world overrun by demons,” (105). This supports my answer because Grubbs doesn’t want everyone to suffer from the pain demons cause. Grubbs knows that the human race will become extinct if he doesn’t sacrifice himself. The fact that Grubbs is willing to sacrifice his life is surprising, but it’s just one life gone rather than the millions of people dead.

201703 Question: What is an important choice or action your character made?

In Darren Shan’s horror fiction book Slawter, an important action my character made was Grubbs using his magic to trick Dervish from thinking that he has no magical powers. Grubbs Grady formerly known as Grubitsch Grady is a teenager that is still learning how to use his magical abilities. After defeating many demons, he has gained a lot of experience and is still exploring his capabilities of magic. On page 230, it says”I think I outfoxed Dervish, I think there is magic inside me, but it responded to my wishes and hid of deflected my uncle’s probe.” This choice Grubbs made was important because back then when Grubbs was first introduced to magic, Grubbs was only able to use it around demons or when he is in Danger. However, now that he has gained more knowledge he is able to use his magic without demons in the vicinity. This development may be useful to Grubbs in the future and gives a hint that Grubbs a true magician. Overall, this choice was important because it allowed Grubbs to have more control over his magical powers.
