Just finished Crooked Kingdom this morning. I liked that we got POV chapters from Wylan in this book, since I kept waiting for them in Six of Crows, and they never happened.Book 2 also had more of an emotional and thematic payoff from its connections to the Grisha trilogy than book 1 did, though it's still not necessary to read those books to understand these. (For the record, I felt so-so about the Grisha trilogy when I read them.)
Hi, so I finished this back before Thanksgiving, but got busy and forgot to come back here to discuss! This book was kind of outrageous, and I'm kind of angry at it for being so outrageous. When I take a step back and look at it objectively, I can't take much that happened too seriously... but I also kind of loved it?
It feels like the Essen Tasch, which is the main focus of the plot in this book, isn't going to have much relevance going forward, and was just there to create crowd-pleasing shenanigans as Schwab strings us along dropping tantalizing bits of character development and withholding anticipated events for as long as physically possible.
But... I was generally happy to let myself be strung along, and the cliffhanger made me more excited for the third book than I was for this one, so... yay?
Anyone else reading this one? I think it's going to be the first that I pick up.I'll be honest, my feelings toward A Darker Shade of Magic have grown somewhat tepid since I read it, so we'll see how this goes!
This is the third book on my list right now, so I'll start it when I finish the other two (which both should be pretty quick for me). I'm guessing I probably won't finish it during the readathon, but who knows! Some of my closest real-life friends are huge fans of this book, and also of the miniseries adaptation. :-)
