Loved this book, Linda. I was interested by his meteorological research, so he could accurately describe the weather on a given day.
I've started this book before, mostly because I love the title, but didn't get very far before I abandoned it. But, I'm a fickle reader, so who knows!
I'd love to re-read some other books from HS/JHS and see how my reaction is different now. My HS read was Animal Farm, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it yesterday. Alas, I have no recollection of what I thought when I read it 30 years ago!
Linda, I was born in Houston and I lived in Dallas before I moved to Tennessee. But I have visited Galveston. It's a small world, even if it is a big state, so it never hurts to ask. I'm afraid I don't know your friends, however!
Oh, yes, Jim Dale is wonderful, Linda. Another fun listen if you can find it, and a great narrator, is Witch Week by Diana Wynne Jones, read by Gerard Doyle.Witch Week
I was already listening to this book when I realized it fits the home state category, being set in central Texas in 1900. I enjoyed this slightly less than the first Calpurnia Tate book, but it got better as I kept reading. Although not set in Galveston, Calpurnia's relatives experience the Galveston storm of 1900, and that was an interesting part of the book.
Is there an Animal Farm movie? I'm so clueless. It would be interesting to see what book can fill the most categories at one time.
sort of on topic, I've thought about rereading all the Harry Potter's in a row, because I don't remember much of them either. So I think it's nice that you at least read them together.
I read and enjoyed it, Linda, but I confess I don't remember much. I'm thinking about Jim Gaffigan for my book by a comedian.
I'll be interested to hear how the movie and book compare. I'd like to read this one also. Which three categories? Travel, movie, ? (I noticed one version has a blue cover)
I had to wait until I got to a desktop to test this out. I like the idea, Linda. I think it would be interesting to see, in one place if possible, which books people read for which category (if they are willing to share). The shelves have possibility for that, though it seems a bit clunky. I added a shelf for a category, home-state, and added my book just to see what happens. Like Trista, I also made myself a personal shelf for the challenge.
Connie, I don't remember/know where you live, but Ruta Sepetys is speaking in Murfreesboro on Jan 28 at the Friends of Linebaugh Library luncheon ($20 to join and $5 for lunch). http://www.wgnsradio.com/friends-of-l... BTW, I enjoyed Salt to the Sea even more than Between Shades of Gray.
Animal FarmI think Animal Farm will be my book not read since high school. It's fun to see which categories everyone is starting with.
I haven't been to the public library in ages, but I manage to keep my Overdrive account pretty full!
Certainly a movie-worthy book, though I'm sure no movie could do the book justice. Maybe someone will make it into a movie?
