Rachel’s comments from the NYRB Classics group.

It is not so much a difference to readers, but in my experience, it's better for bookstores. NYRB is distributed through Penguin Random House, now making Archipelago distributed through PRH which could make it easier for bookstores to purchase their titles. When I worked in a bookstore, we had contracts/deals with the big 5 publishers so ordering through them was easy and gave us different payment plan options. For books that weren't distributed through them, we would order through Ingram, which was fine but we paid more for each book, had to pay our bill quicker, and they had different return rules.
