I really liked the book. I actually felt like I knew the characters extremely well, which is funny given your impressions Phil. I did tend to agree on the "puppy love" thing they had going on. But I thought it wasn't too horribly done, given the nature of the relationship. And Henry's emotions clearly had ranged. He seemed like a much fuller character than Clare.I did like the introduction of Alba, and the truly "timeless" nature of Henry and Clare's relationship. I kind of liked the style, although I agree it could have had more flow.
In the end, I agree. Really good book, but not GREAT.
This months books is Perfume. Already started on it, and I've gotta say, I'm really digging just about everything about it so far.
Well, we need a few more suggestions for a poll. Maybe I'll make an EvAv thread, and then make a poll based on that.
I'll throw some suggestions out, and maybe someone will latch on to one of the books I want to read for the Book of the Month.Albert Camus - The Plague

Just finished reading the book a couple days ago. I don't agree with Eric about the cliche so much, but maybe it's because I've always been aware that this book was the inspiration of so many others that I've loved. Here's my comments, from the review. This was a very powerful book, and shows an insight that is nothing short of incredible on behalf of the author. It took a while for the book to really engage me...I started to become interested in Bernard in what seemed to me to be too far in the story. It wasn't until we see the Savage that I really got hooked. The character fascinated me, being highly intelligent but raised in such a limited fashion.
The comparisons we can make to where our culture has headed are nothing short of astounding. It's a little scary to think about this being written in the 30's...that's what struck me first about the book.
I haven't read the Revisted part yet, but given how much foresight this author seems to have, I plan on reading it. My only real criticism is that sometimes the sentence structure and grammar came across as very jarring. Whatever it's literary purpose was intended for, it didn't come across very well for me.
Started reading this last night. Off to an impressive start, especially when I keep having to remind myself that Huxley wrote this in 1932.
I've already got that on my to-read shelf, so yes! But that book may be too commonly read by this crowd to be the monthly book.
