One theme I think the author was trying to emphasize was to choose your own life. She was trying to tell the reader that no one else should choose your life, or at least not all of it. She wanted us to see that we could make our own decisions and that we should not let someone or something, like the government, make decisions for us. It is okay for some decisions to be made for us. One example is when you are little. As a young child you could not make a good choice by yourself, so someone older like your parents makes it for you. It is okay that you don't make these decisions on your own, but once you get older you can make many more on your own. The author wanted us to realize that no one should control us especially when it is an important decision like getting married. To show this in the book the author created characters and a setting that showed an extreme example of someone have no decisions in there life. This let the readers see how it feels and realize what it would mean for someone in that situation. I will always remember to make my own decisions when I need to and I hope others will too.
Matched created many feelings for me such as fear, anger, sadness, joy and excitement. I feel this way because of the things Cassia feels and the things that happen to her. When Cassia feels happy I feel happy. When she is sad I feel sad. We do this in real life too. When a good friend of yours is sad about something that happened over the weekend you will feel sad too. When Cassia must meet with the official during school she thinks, "Thank goodness. Is that why she's here? But what about the Infraction?"(Condie 244). It made me relieved and worried. I was relieved it wasn't one thing but worried about the other things that could still be a problem just like how Cassia felt. I know I would be worried quiet a lot if I lived in Society. There are so many rules!
The characters in Matched seem real. They go through things that many people in real life have to just in a different setting. Cassia doesn't remind me of myself because I would probably do things a little different than her. She does make you think of a real person though because she acts like a real person and does things a real person might do. Many people have difficult things they have to do. Every one has a secret. Some times a few people know about it like in Cassia's case Ky and her father. Cassia will have different things she must go through and different secrets because she does not live a life like ours today. She seems real though because we know that if we were in that setting we may make the same decisions.
The setting is unique because it takes place in the future were people try to be perfect. They believe that the Society is perfect and never gets things wrong. "The Society doesn't make mistakes." (Condie 36). They trust them to make many of there choices for them. The Society chooses your meals, you job, and your match or soul mate. It would be hard for me to trust them.
