I use the receipt from the bookstore or library where I got the book, usually. I lose bookmarks like you wouldn't believe, though, so I've made it a habit to note what page I'm on before I close the book.

Nearly all of my books are bought second hand or from bargain bins or sale racks. Also, library books sales, Half-Price Books, freebies for the Kindle, book trades with friends...

I very rarely go to the big chain bookstores unless I was given a gift card, and even then rarely do I buy full priced books.
