I'm with Lorie. Go for it! Many of my classmates in library school came to library science from other professions, and coming to library science with a teaching/education background is an asset indeed. It should serve you well. I hear school librarians/media specialist positions are really where it's at right now and even if you ultimately decide to go the public library route, should you ever change your mind, you could transition really easily. Lorie was not kidding about the hiring freezes. Out here Chicago Public Library is in the middle of one--and this is in a town that has historically been incredibly supportive of its libraries. All the better to be in school now though--there will be better days ahead. My only other advice to you is make sure you bone up on your online resources and Web 2.9 and technology--keep that in mind when you're picking your courses. Technology, social networking, and all of that are a huge part of librarianship right now and anyone who will be interviewing you will be asking about your experience with those.
Best novel for adults? I've probably done far more reading in YA and J Fic this year than adults, so this may take some thinking.
I love the Zusak and Meyer suggestions. Zusak's I am the Messenger is one of the best teen books I've read in the last year. I also lied Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes--I forget the author.
